no tips, really, but thank your lucky stars that they did'nt break off in the head. i seem to lose a stud every time.

Soak 'em in penetrating oil, and then heat 'em up and then use a stud extractor tool to take them out.
No fun when one breaks and you have to drill the EZ out the drill out the briken EZout and............... http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
And neverseize the new ones on instalation and cleanout the thread holes if they a pooped

Re: exhaust manifold studs. (rebel_eye)

would there be advantage to upgrading to stainless steel studs? How do they handle heat?
Re: exhaust manifold studs. (Dieder)

Stainless is usually worse at handling vibration stresses, heat and is brittle. Not the best solution. If you think about it, those original studs probably have 15+ years on them. Simply replacing with new ones gives you another 15+ years.

Have you tried double nutting them? Put two nuts on the stud (that may be the dirtiest thing I have ever written) Then tighten them against each other. Use a wrench on the first nut you put on and turn it. (righty tighty, lefty loosey) The pressure of the first nut against the second will allow you to thread the stud out of the block. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

That's a damn fine idea! Is that why you have the word 'nut' in your handle?
