Exhaust sound

I have a 2000 Jetta GLX and I would like to get a little bit more exhaust noise. I don't want really loud, just a slight rumble in the back ground. Any suggestions on how to get this? I would rather just change out the muffler, but if a catback is what it's going to take, I'll do that to. Thanks.

Re: Exhaust sound (humulus)

Does the Mk4 Jetta VR6 have a suitcase muffler as part of the exhaust system? If so, REMOVE IT!!!!

Have a muffler shop chop it off and put a straight pipe in it's place. Leave the stock end muffler in it's place and see how the exhaust sounds. If it is too loud, then put the suitcase muffler back.

Re: Exhaust sound (humulus)

I don't think there is an exhaust that sounds bad on a VR

I sent you an e-mail.
Re: Exhaust sound (Bundaho)

Thanks Bundaho. That sounds good. How is it when it comes to just everyday driving? I would like to hear my exhaust, but just as a background noise. With the stock exhaust, it's hard to tell if the car is on. .

I also like the suggestion of cutting off the "suitcase" muffler. I'm new to VW's (just got the car last weekend), but can I assume that from the cat it 2 mufflers (kinda pre and post kinda thing)?
Thanks.

Yeah... it should be just before the rear muffler... and it is kinda big and is also known as a mid muffler.
Here is a pic of a Mk3 mid muffler removed:

I added just a cone filter to mine (1996) and it got quite a bit louder. When I am not on the throttle, or idling it is just as loud as stock, but when you put the gas down halfway or more, the car gets a nice growl, especially above about 2500...sounds sweet, and its nice cause its not too loud unless you really get on it. I plan to purchase an exhaust when i get the $$, but if you just want a nicer sound, try that. Much cheaper than exhaust

Re: Exhaust sound (chuck_simpson)

wow, chuck, that is a lot cleaner looking then what Meneike did to my car! To compare, that pipe there is the hottest woman in the world, my pipe is Roseann Barr.... Perhaps if I got a cleanly bent pipe it'd work better... TT exhaust is good http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif one of the best exhaust companies for VWs

Re: Exhaust sound (chuck_simpson)

Very nice Chuck. Did you do that yourself or have a shop do it? What did it do to the sound?
Re: Exhaust sound (humulus)

Sorry... that's not mine. It's just an example of the mid-muffler removed.
I actually have a full cat-back Eurosport exhaust on my car. Sounds great!

I've been trying to decide which to buy for my 98 Gti VR6, Autotech, Eurosport, or TT. I know that Autotech's exhaust is the lightest out of the three, with the TT only a few lbs more, but I haven't heard any of these exhausts, and was wondering if anybody has some sound clips of these exhausts.

Re: Exhaust sound (humulus)

Everyday driving is fine. The only time i get a problme is a drone if you cruise around 60mph. Its around 2500-2900rpms. Other then that its great. Its not loud at all. Even at WOT its not that loud.

I like that sound around 60 mph, sounds nice I think. But the intake is still louder than the exhaust, by far. I think there are 2 reasons to cut the suitcase out:
1. If you want a little more sound than stock and better flow, but can't afford a full cat-back for a while
2. If you don't want a full cat-back, or want to keep it quiet.
If you have the money and want a cat-back, don't bother doing this mod, cuz it's just a waste of $50-90 (varies shop to shop) Another solution to do is cut the suitcase out and buy a performance muffler, dunno how that'd perform next to an actual aftermarket cat-back exhaust though. I think it'd be a pretty close match, except the aftermarket exhaust would probably weigh lighter than the factory exhaust. One nice thing about going from factory exhaust to aftermarket exhaust is the fact that the whole aftermarket exhaust weighs the same, if not lighter, than the suitcase, major weight reduction in my book
Chuck, your exhaust sounds good! What flywheel are you using, Autotech? How much of a difference did it make in acceleration?

No sound clip, but I can assure you get a barf bag cause the Autotech sounds sick.

Man, was hoping for a sound clip. All three exhausts are real good, it comes down to price, look, sound, and weight. The Autotech is the most expensive(like 600 I think, isn't it?) but it's also the lightest, and the tip looks pretty nice(which it were dual dtm, but the 3.5" single tip looks nice, kinda Hondaish, but that's ok), TT is 495 for 2.5" Borla SS muffler, weighs a slight bit more than Autotech, but the dual dtm tip costs like 130 extra http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif only problem I have with the Eurosport is that it is only a 2.25" pipe diameter, and weighs like almost 40 lbs if you get the dual dtm ceramic coated. Price is good at 400 though, and it sounds real good... I hate these decisions.
Post more sound clips if anybody has them, or movies, I dun care what, just gimme some input!

Oh, forgot to ask this, but on Autotechs site, it says that it starts at the midpipe, so it doesn't come with a resonator, you have to use your factory one or something? This has me a little confused, if it isn't a full cat-back exhaust, then why is it so much?

True dat, but it's also a mid-pipe back and that's the difference in weight, as the others are cat-back.
Re: Exhaust sound (oldkidVR6)

i just bought my 2.5 tt and i got a tt oval tip ( similar to my stock tip but polished) i paid $400 http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Exhaust sound (humulus)

i think the best system is the stock leistriz system with the POS suitcase hacked out... give the car a raw sound. plus only costs $30

Re: Exhaust sound (PhOO)

On MKIV's you can get a TDI midpipe to get rid of the resonator.
It will make the volume of the exhaust go up a little more.
I have a Supersprint cat back exhaust on my MKIV and it's not overly loud to make it annoying on trips. It just makes the car sound even sweeter.
