supposedly so red light cameras, etc. can't read your plate. They are for the most part illegal and for the most part, don't work.

I think he meant when posting pictures on the internet, most people edit out their plate numbers.
The fear is that, in the event of a flame war, the other guy could say, call the cops in your town and say you hit and ran or something.
I'm not worried, though. Look! Plates! (this my my project car and my old DD)

The reason that most people black out their license plates is because you can take the plate number to the DMV, pay 10$ and find out where the address of the registered owner is. If you post your car on the net, as well as a list of badass mods, someone who wants them can find out where you live and steal your car. No one knows your mod list when you're driving around on the street tho.

Very simple explanation.
Guy A sees Guy Bs car on the website listing all his mods.
Guy A wants some of Guy Bs mods, but since they cost soo much money...
Guy A notices license plate of Guy Bs car.
Guy A goes to DMV, gets Guy Bs home address.
Next day, Guy B notices his car has been broken into in his driveway
and all his expensive parts were stolen!

If some guy throws a baseball bat through your windshield, $10 to the DMV is a very sensible way to find him/her, and dispense whatever punishment you wish
