Got a set of these babies last week. 225/45/17 were $106 each from http://www.vulcantire.com - cheaper than discount tire direct by a few bucks, and some of the cheapest summer tires around. They are currently the de-facto standard for street tire autocross classes, so the purchase decision was easy.
I placed the order on Monday at 6PM, and they were sitting in my office Wednesday at 10AM. It took the installer about 2 hours to get them mounted because, according to them, the sidewalls were so stiff. I broke them in on a nice trip to Mass. and back the next day.
In short, these are by far the stickiest street tires I have ever driven on. They are substantially better than the Kumho Ecsta 712s that I had before. They are also about 1/2" wider for the same section size. These feel more like R-compound tires than summer tires, in that they break away very slowly, and are nearly silent. Exit speed on my favorite off-ramp has increased by about 5 MPH compared to the Kumhos. Wet performance is about equal to the Kumhos. They are quiet on the highway, although very stiff.
I'm autocrossing on them tomorrow, I'll report back. Here are some pics:

holy contact patch tread-man. Any idea what the tread life is on a set of those? ... because they for some reason remind me of Yokohama A032R race tires (not the tread), just lots of rubber and seem really soft

damn those look aggresive! I'm gonna need new tires sometime soon, so I'll be looking forward to hearing your reviews after you've had them a bit.

According to autocross friends who drive on them daily, the tread life is very good - comparable to other summer tires. But at only $106 a pop, who really cares?

alinp75, the exhaust is a Remus.

That must've been the first time I've seen a mk4 on stock suspension lift a wheel. Those tires must've been gripping nice. Good drive in STS especially on stock suspension http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Falken Azenis - review and pics (s8tan)

Update:
Yesterday I autocrossed my car in STS (I was running the stock chip). The tires performed great! I'm not really used to autoxing a front drive car - I've been running a B-Stock Miata for a while now, and quickly forgot what an understeer battle it is - but it was clear that the Azenises are somewhere inbetween a street tire and a race tire. They seemed to like about 40 PSI in the front (they were rolling over with 38) and no matter how high the rear was (ended at 54 psi) I couldn't get the car to rotate. As Richard said I'm on the stock suspension with 55k miles on it so I wasn't expecting much. The tires were definitely too much for the suspension, since the car seemed to be flopping all over the place but still hanging on to the contact patches for dear life.

I don't plan to run the car any more, but it's nice to know that I could in a pinch! I ended up mid-pack in STS, and 28th overall out of 114. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure.

712's are rated at 280.

You can't really compare treadware ratings between manufacturers- they each have a different scale. I agree that the Falkens will probably wear faster than the Ecsta 712's, but it's not exactly 1.4 times or anything. People I know say the Falkens hold up very well, better than other summer tires they have used.
