Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions

790 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Terbonium
I was wondering what the final drive ratio of a 2001 aww golf GLS is....and if anyone here has done the eurospec 6th gear conversion. This kit replaces the 5th gear and adds a 6th. there are two different ratios to choose from:
1) 5th =.89 6th=.75
2) 5th =.96 6th=.85
here`s a pic:

Any thoughts

HOW MUCH?!!! as well as what kinda changes to the top end could we expect with this kit?
Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (KEITH)

you can find it on
http://www.eurospecsport.com
You have to but it through one of their dealers( ECS tuning being one of them), and the list is $1400 which is pricey, but I've seen soem of their stuff sell for a bit under what its listed on their site, but this is an awesome mod. As far as how the top end is affected, this is why i was asking what the 5th gear ratio is on our cars as it is, because then you can calculate what kind of rpms you get at what speed with teh numbers provided.
Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (kreuzerGOLF18T)

My problem is, they list this for the o2a, not the o2j. Will it work in our trannies? Another thing is, I don't think I can justify spending $1400 for a conversion that comes with only two gears. I think the quaiffe 6 is like $2k? somebody has got to make this stuff cheaper. Fuel economy isn't worth that much
Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (tatge)

actually, if you do the math, it will pay for itself with all the gas you save in about 4 years if you drive about 13500 miles a year...

5th =.89 6th=.75, that could be fun and economical, but still $1400!! I still want to know if it works in the O2J as well as the O2A
Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (kreuzerGOLF18T)

I think final drive is 3.94:1

I didn't realize that our cars had th o2j. Do they all? also, I for me it wouldn't just be for fuel economy. it'sjust that I find it annoying having the engine turning at 4k rpm at 85 mph. I forsee my car making big power in teh next 2 years, and it won't need to turn that fast.

02J 396 047 H ORIGINAL 02J TRANSMISSION WITH 6-SPEED ADD ON RING & PINION=3.940
CODE: EGC 1ST=3.300, 2ND=2.120, 3RD=1.310, 4TH=1.030, 5TH=0.890, 6TH= 0.750

Is this what you are looking for?
02J 396 047 H $2,250.00
That is listed as O.E. trans with 6Spd. Add on.... Seems like a smoking deal to me
Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (MySunRoofWorks)

wow. that is cheap! I'm giving thema call nonetheless to see what's up with the pricing and what they offer. If you can get a complete o2j 6 speed for 2250, i'll just try and unload the tranny I have and buy this one.

Re: Final drive ratio and 6 gear conversions (MySunRoofWorks)

Give Tom at ECS a call. He has a complete Eurospec 6 speed tranny with a Quaife ready to be installed. Too much money for me though. I was talking to him about the add on kit. His prices were really good, and as quick as I run out 5th I'd really like to go with a taller 5th or add a 6th.
