Five lug conversion- how hard and how much $$$?

715 Views 13 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  vwtoys
There are quite a few nice 5 lug wheels I'd like to put on my GTI, but infortunately that's out of the question in stock form. What does it take to change a 4 lug system to a 5, and about how much money and effort will it take?

much $$$$
most of the time it's only worth it combined with an engine swap....
more likely are adapters for the rims, or having the rims re-lugged

CHEAP and not that hard as long as you rob (not literally rob) a wrecked car. If you bought this stuff new, then obviously it is going to be bank. Just take all the stuff of a car at your local junk yard and bargin with the junk guy or offer to trade some of your old stuff on top of $$ for it. Deals make things like this possible for cheap...don't buy this stuff from a dealer!

For the most straightforward approach, you'll need:
Rear 5-lug rotors (if your car already has rear discs)
Front control arms, spindles/hubs, ball joints, calipers, rotors, half shafts, sway bar from an A3 VR6 or Corrado VR6

I did it on my G60 Corrado for under $300.
Here's how: http://65.12.83.218:81/brakes/5lug.htm
Most of the info will apply to the A2 cars, and you don't have ABS which makes the swap much easier.
Also - the reason I drilled the G60 rotors instead of simply using a set of 11" VR6 rotors is that the spacing on the rotors is different - Vr6 rotors won't work beacuse you won't be able to install the calipers afterwards.

I'll probably end up doing this to my jetta.
Re: Five lug conversion- how hard and how much $$$? (ViolentBlue)

rpi sells a kit for ~$500 to convert a2 to big brake 5 lug. if i end up keeping my gti, i am going to do that.
Re: Five lug conversion- how hard and how much $$$? (NightFlyerGTI)

I could probably get the parts for cheap for you, like $150 if you're interested....
Re: Five lug conversion- how hard and how much $$$? (NightFlyerGTI)

is the 5 bolt pattern on a bmw the same? I spotted a bmw with a sweet set of wheels that had a massive front end collision.
Re: Five lug conversion- how hard and how much $$$? (mpaster)

Wow, are those the wheels that come on some of the new Beetles? They look good on your Corrado.
BTW, I just bought some new rear rotors for my car, if anyone is intrested, I will sell you my stock rear rotors. 5X100 lug pattern.
