I know this subject has been hashed out quite a bit lately, but this is something that I could not find any information about in the search...so here 'goes. I just bought a set of 165K focals for the front of my car. They do fit in the factory location, but I'm having difficulty getting the stock grills back on. Did you re-use the stock grills? If so, did you have to modify anything to get them back on? I'm wondering if I should just buy a set of focal grills to put over them...but IMO it would look nicer, and still appear to be stock if I could keep my current grills. TIA for any assistance.

I had a set of Focal 6'5" components prior to my Nakamichi's and now MB Quarts in which I had to use the stock grills. Was a PITA and didn't look very clean (nor stealth) so I sold them.

I fit the 165k's with the grill no problem. However I took them off because of constant rattling. I've since moved them in the back and the rear grill's dont fit. The Utopia's fit in there too (barely), but no way that grill comes even close to going on.

Thanks guys for the help. Looks to me like I should forget about the stock grills. Hopefully I can find some grills that will fit in there. And yes, the focals are quite deep, but they do barely fit in there if you monkey around with them for a while. Ya know, I love VWs to death, but this is one thing I hate about them - putting together a cost-effective, loud, and stealth sound system in a VW is very difficult. Maybe I'm just retarded, but back in the day, I had a CRX - that thing was so easy to wire a system to...and the factory holes actually held aftermarket drivers! Imagine that.

You think you have it bad? Try a Mk4! Threw a set of Image Dynamics in my previous '00 GTI and man, had to take the door panels off, drill out the RIVETS holding the stock speakers in the door, fabricate my own MDF rings as spacers to hold the speaker and after everything was said and done, it still sounded like crap. The door panel and stock grille are fused together and just basically lays over the speakers. Talk about rattle city.

Needless to say, my Jetta doors are a helluva lot easier to work with.

That's nothing. The Nak's I had didn't even fit in the speaker cutout. and they were too deep as well. I had to mount them on the door and use the supplied grills.

I hear ya. I installed a set of Infinity Perfect 6.1 components in my 96 Golf, and I had to create MDF adapters, the whole PITA 9 yards. Man, these mids are deep on the Perfects.
But they sound good.
