I got screwed the same way, the right size is 205/45/17. Its no real big deal the tire will turn more which throws off the speed a little and milage a bit but its not lliek the cars goign to expolde. I would say unless you really want new tires wait for tose to wear out and the get the right size.

Just go to 225/45/17's. Don't need those little skinny tires anyhow.

225/45/17 are stock vw 17s.look good and handle nice but
225/40/17 is best. (on audi TT) make the rim look bigger and more of a clean wall

Here's a tire size calculator that you can use to determine which tire size approximates the stock size so your speedo is still right:

No thats wrong, Audi TT wheels come with 225/45/17. I have a set and have seen a lot of people with stock tires on the TT wheels and they all are 225/45/17.
I am pretty sure that 225/40/17 will mess up the speedometer. That size is smaller than stock.
Edit: That calculator says that if you stock size is 225/45/17 and you change to 225/40/17, then the non stock tire is 3.5% too fast, meaning that if your speedo says 60 MPH you are actually traveling 57.9 MPH

225/45/17 works great. I am running 205/45s right now and they are just to small. Going back to 225/45 next month (205s are bald already). I am running 245s on the rear!!
