quote:

GM may boost production of new Cadillac CTS
By Michael Ellis
DETROIT, Feb 7 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp.'s (NYSE:GM - news) new Cadillac CTS is selling so fast that the automaker is considering moving up the addition of a second shift of workers at the Lansing, Michigan plant where the luxury sedans are made in order to boost production, officials said on Thursday.

The CTS, which went on sale last month, has been ``flying off the shelves,'' Gary Cowger, president of GM North America, told reporters at the Chicago Auto Show.
The CTS, which replaces the slow-selling Catera entry-level luxury vehicle in Cadillac's lineup, is key to the brand as it tries to claw its way back after suffering from slowing sales in recent years. The car is the first Cadillac to fully utilize the division's new sharp-edged design.
The new Lansing Grand River assembly plant where the CTS is built currently operates on one shift of workers capable of producing 30,000 to 35,000 CTSs annually.
Cowger said the automaker could decide during its April production meeting to add a second shift, which would then take four to six months to get up and running to build more of the luxury sedans. The Lansing Grand River plant was scheduled to add a second shift of workers early next year to build the Cadillac SRX sport utility-like vehicle.
Meanwhile, GM, which last year led the industry in U.S. truck sales, on Thursday unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show two Pontiac sedans which the automaker hopes will boost its flagging car sales.
GM showed the Bonneville G/XP and the Grand Prix G-Force, two concept cars which officials said resemble production cars that could arrive on the market next year.
``GM has truck leadership now, and we intend to keep it. What we need to do next is bring our cars up to the same level,'' Lynn Myers, the general manager of Pontiac-GMC, told reporters at the auto show.
Myers said that GM is working on the business case for bring the Bonneville G/XP -- a supercharged Bonneville full-size sedan without the side plastic cladding -- to market next year as a special edition.
The Grand Prix G-Force resembles the Grand Prix sedan set to go on sale in spring, 2003, she added. Both vehicles show Pontiac's new sleek styling.
GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz changed the front end of the Grand Prix G-Force soon after GM hired the former Chrysler executive last August. The trademark Pontiac dual grille on the concept originally resembled fangs before he had it shortened.
``It's internal nickname was Alvin. Some people called it Bucky Beaver,'' he said.

Re: for all the CTS naysayers... (CanuckPal)

Excellent! All the more CTSs to merge out into the fast lane of Depreciation Lane.... I'd love to pick up a 3 year old CTS (probably in some dark color) for $18k. For the right price, I'm willing to put up with some ugliness....
Wonder how many manual tranny versions they're selling....

I heard that they only expect 5% of production to be manual-transmission models. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif Similar to the numbers of Lincoln LS five-speeds...

Wonder if IS300 manual-tranny sales numbers are similar... I could see the CTS, with its edgy styling, attracting a similar clientele.
Anyway, if I bought an used LS (and I've thought about it - maybe I'll rent one today in Florida if I'm feeling flush), I'd buy the V8.

I know I've seen numbers for the Passat and the 3series - 25% seems about right for Passats, and BMW was pushing 30% I think....
I can just see all of those 68 year old Cadillac owners popping in their dentures and running down to the dealership now that Caddy has their first manual tranny in 15 years....

Saab leads with about 50% of sales being manual tranny models. Only 3% of Nissan Maximas are sticks-shifts though. I'm surprised how many Passats are sticks. Local dealer has five used ones and I think only one or two are automatics.

Wow! I didn't know Saabs had such a stick percentage.
When my wife got her '99 9-5 wagoon (pardon me, estate), it was the end of the year and I figured, "No way in heck are you (to the salesguy) going to find a WAGON with a stick in December!" <guy types on computer for 2 minutes> "We got (3) black ones to choose from in New York." My jaw and ego drops.
As far as the 60 year olds flocking to a stick'd CTS...
When I was at a dealer late last year when Caddy was prancing an early build around Motown dealers, there were (3-4) 50-60-ish couples that were specifically asking about the stick! Talk about eye opening. The funny thing was I had to be the salesguy, because their salespeople didn't know jack about the car... actually making things up sometimes.
On the 30k initial volume...
I wonder if GM was just milking the fact that slow ramp-ups, etc. gives them the opportunity to say, "They're flying off the shelf!!!" No duh! Who in their right mind actually would think a package like this WOULDN'T sell more than double that amount?! That's only a third of the WRX's "initial" allotment and it is in a faaar smaller niche than an entry class RWD luxury car with brand heritage like the CTS.

Some of you forget, but almost everyone over 60 (everyone I've met at least) knows how to drive a stick, because there weren't many affordable cars with automatics when they learned to drive. Sure they might not have driven one in the last 20 years, but they still know how, takes em back to thier youth, etc.

Interesting that you brought up the WRX - I think that both the CTS and WRX have the potential to lose sales because of their looks. Also, I think the WRX has a stronger brand heritage - re: the forebidden rally-bred fruit - in their market segment than Cadillac does.
Still, as you mention, 35k cars isn't a whole lot in this competitive class, especially considering the pretty decent price of the CTS.

yeah, our Landlord is in his late 60s (or early 70s, i forget) and he has several HUGE vehicles used to transport concrete blocks. all the big vehicles have non-synchronized manual trannies. he's gotta match all the revs and everything. but then he has trucks with automatic trannies too.

Props to Caddy - they used to be a wolrd class car - now maybe it will regain some of that marque status and leave the ugly GM stigma behind. Personally I have nothing against the CTS - if they introduce a supercharged version to compete against the S-type R and the M type (in theory) more power to them. I know they will get little love from this board - but then again that does not surprise me.

Last weekend Cadillac rented the road course here between Baton rouge and New Orleans, to introduce the new sports car and redesigened the infeild of the track to show the capabilities of the sport ute(over hills, in the mud). They dropped over a million dollars at the facility. Good freind is marketing director for the track. He said that the new sports car is really nice and really performed well. web address for the track is "No Problem raceway.com. "
