I used a metal cutting disk on mine. I've also got this metal scribe cutter thingy but it's harder to control...I'll be doing this again tomorrow night ( assuming the men in brown bring me presents ) on my Jetta, just remember to sand down the real rough edges and make sure you paint around the area you cut with something so it doesn't rust!!! I recommend using a dremmel with fiberglass cutting wheels....get several of them since the metal chews them up pretty good. Just make sure you mark off the area you are cutting to make the job easier...

i used a dremel with the carbide cutting discs. went thru probably 2 or 3, and then sanded it down and painted over with flat black to help prevent rusting.
all in all, it took less than 5 mins.
