that's what you get for upgrading your license plate lights.

If it starts to flash, this means the bulb is on it's way out.
I've learned over the years, that the license plate lights must have a voltage spike or uneven power running to them. I use a superbrightleds bulb in mine. It has 9 leds in each bulb, but after about 6 months, a few of the leds will burn out. Then I just replace them, $4 bucks a bulb, no problem.
bright white huh?...

Re: for those with LED license plate lights.. (SPKNGRMN)

as stated by 42dd with the LED swap on the license plate:
"the license plate lights int he mk4 gti and NB are completely sealed. license plate lights are constantly lit even with the headlights off. this is by far the harshest environment for the fuse style LEDs. these lights MUST be vented in order for the LEDs to last. to vent these lights, remove and unplug the lights. the entire top of the housing must be vented in order for the LEDs to shed their heat. to do this simply cut or drill out the top of the plastic enclosure. if this is not doen the LEDs will only last 1-6 months depending on the relative temperature of your area. Jetta license plate lights are completely vented and do not suffer from this heat issue."
take care of that and I'm sure you wont have any problems afterwards.
