a couple of things:
Check the fog lights for cracks.
The coil pack and plug wires will probably need replacing esp if they havent been so budget $300 for that. They go on all VR6s; nothing wrong with that, just be aware

Check for super sloppy shifter.
Other than that, check for the usuals:
Smooth power window operation
Smooth sunroof operation (tilt & slide)
Drive it hard and make sure the car accelerates smoothly to near redline and the tranny shifts without grinding.
Verify brakes are good, check pads/rotors for excessive wear, and e-brake engages without having to pull up too high.
Have someone rev on the engine and you check out what comes out of the exhaust. Make sure it isn't too much smoke.

Pop open the hood and look for obvious leaks.
Look at coolant overflow tank and see if the fluid still looks somewhat pink.
That's all I can think of right now.

GTI VR6 are only available with manual!
