This morning as I was under the car tie wrapping some wires and crap...I notice a small hole on the transaxle. My initial reaction was that of holy poop!! But, after thinking about it for a sec...I realized that when I drained all of the gear oil about a month or so ago...it seemed as though it was all still in there. On top of that, I immediately refilled it. It doesn't appear as though the hole is connected to anything leading to where the oil resides (it's not leaking). Keep in mind though, I haven't driven on this tranny yet. Here's a pic of the hole...this is on the front side of the tranny right below the starter (you can see part of it in the pic). Can anybody tell me if they think this will be a problem?? Thanks. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Found small hole in tranny!!!! (Dextrose)

By the look of the picture, it appears the hole is in the bell housing which does not hold any of the transaxle fluid. Is this a rebuilt transmission? If so, take it back to the shop who installed it for them to look at it.

It's probably just an air pocket in the casting that's broken through recently. Don't worry about it, it won't do any harm. There IS oil behind there though, Myron is wrong. The bellhousing starts just behind that lug.
When it looks like this, worry.

No, no fluid is coming out of the hole. And yes, this is back beyond the bell housing part of the tranny...on the actual TRANNY side of things. If I shine the light at just the right angle, it seems like I can see a little something in there. Like I said before though, I changed the fluid in the thing about a month or so ago and it seemed like it was completely full when I emtied it out. It also did not leak anything when I filled it back up. Again, I have not driven the car since I got this engine/tranny. And to answer whoever's question above...yes, this is a rebuilt tranny from VW but it was not rebuilt for me, so there is no way it can be taken back. I'm not really concerned about that anyway. I just finished 5 long months worth of work on this conversion and I'm hoping this will not throw a monkey wrench into the works.

Yeah, I suppose I'll have to do something like that. Honestly I don't think it's anything to worry seriously about. Keeping my finders crossed to say the least. The last thing I want to do is have to pull then engine back out after finally getting it in there...for something lame like this.

Damm, I hate it when I'm wrong
. I didn't bother looking as closely the first time as I should have. I just now noticed the bottom of the starter body in the pic. When I saw the reinforcing rib, I just ASSumed it was the bell housing. FWIW, there is no oil there either, it's transmission fluid
.

Thanks for the light hearted reply, but that really doesn't help my situation any. If you haven't read already, I said there is NO apparent oil leaking from the hole. I have no idea why though..so maybe it's not as big of a deal as I originally thought??

Re: Found small hole in tranny!!!! (late_apex)

quote:

It looks like the back side of a bolt hole. Is there a bolt that goes into the other side? if so don't worry about it, it has a threaded bolt in there.

Apex...you were right. I just ran down to the garage and took another look. I can see the tip of a bolt in there. I guess there must be a bolt that starts inside the bell housing...on the other side of that thing sticking off just to the left of my circle. Whew...now I feel a LOT better. I'm sure it will be fine now.

Biltz...thanks for the support man. We're gonna try to crank it tomorrow. I wish I had a video camera so I could record it. LOL

I'm by no stretch of the imagination an expert, but it looks as though that might just be a flaw in the casting of the gearbox housing. Did you notice this before? I think if it's dry, and there is no fuid coming out you might be OK, but I'd keep an eye on it.

I believe that is indeed the case. I think it should be okay, but I will certainly plan to keep an eye on it. You can imagine the feeling of seeing something like that for the first time after working on something like I have on this for 5 months.
