Friend has problem with 98 1.8tgls.

My friend has a 98 1.8t gls. Yesterday the cat seemed to malfunction. It makes loud clicking noises, only when idling. The car seems to shake a lot on start up. Does anyone have any advice besides taking it to a dealer to get it checked? The warranty is up.
