Front engines : 924/944/928/968
Not too sure about those, just guessing from what I think I remember.

Re: front engine porsches... (AudiVwMeister)

The standard 968, which is pictured above, had a 3.0 litre 16v 4 cylinder rated at 236hp.
Most front-engined Porsches were equipped with 'world engines', all catalyzed, all with the same HP figures, from the introduction of the 1987 944S on.
There are three other models not mentioned, which are essentially variations/refinements of the 924/944 series:
944 Turbo (951): 2.5l 8v turbo, 217hp, 150+mph performance. Porsche's junior supercar, with performance that eclipsed the 911 of the day in many respects (if not all). Equipped with 4 piston Brembo front brakes, Koni height adjustable struts, etc. Very easily modified to produce 250-300hp. Turbo S/1989 Turbo had larger turbo and other mods to produce 247hp stock.
944S, 1987-1988: First use of the DOHC 16v cylinder head in the 944 series, the 188hp 944S used a variation of the 928 S4 DOHC head and the Turbo's more sophisticated engine management system to bridge the gap in price and performance between the 148hp 8v 944 and 217hp 944 Turbo. Nice cars--I own one--but unfortunately saddled with an Achilles Heel or 2.
944S2: Introduced in 1989 above the 8v 944 (then 2.7L), then becoming the only 944 on offer in 1990 (in the US), the 944S2 came in coupe and new cabriolet form. 2.5L 16v motor enlarged to 3.0L and a host of other modifications to create a 208hp motor with more torque, creating a much quicker, more tractable car. I consider this to be one of the best buys of the 944 range, and the car I would look for if given the resources.
The 4cyl front engine Porsches are widely hailed as being one of the best-handling and steering cars ever built. Rear transaxles contributed to a 50/50 weight distribution, and most 86+ 944's had such advanced componentry as aluminum front control arms.
All 944's were offered with a massive range of optional extras, including the M030 suspension package which made them autocross-ready from the factory. However, much like today's BMW's and Porsches, most everything was an optional extra; the original window sticker on my 1988 944S includes such 'options' as a rear window wiper and PARTIAL leather interior (!).

I can't think of any mainstream front wheel drive Porsches in the US. They're mostly RWD with the AWD later turbos and C4s.
The 968 is the continuation of the 944. Nothing to do with the 928. I've never been a big fan of the 928 but I'd love to have a decent 944 or 968.
What exactly are you wanting to find out?

Re: front engine porsches... (deko)

968s are beautiful cars! Especially the 968 cabrios, I've seen a couple driving around here, and they're amazing!
I'd heard somewhere that at one point Porsche hoped to replace the 911 with the 968, is there any truth to this wild speculation?
Re: front engine porsches... (lacuna)

hey, while on the topic of porsches, does anyone have any pics of that old boxster i think, it was kind of flat in the back behind the rear window? im gonna see if i can find one now but i was curious on how they perform...
