Fuba (antenna) questions.

910 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  vapor
Hey,
I'm looking to replace my fuba (amp is dead) as my next project. But first, I wanna know exactly what to buy to get the new amplifier... what part #, what vendor should I buy from, and how much should I pay? I found some vendors before but there were some different options.
Secondly, how will I get the headliner off to replace it? Anyone have specific steps for getting the thing off with out breaking it? I tried once and failed to see how to do it without breakage.
Thanks in advance for helping me get started on my next project!

Re: Fuba (antenna) questions. (diegs)

Diegs.
Pull the rear most leather panel that is at the back of the headliner,It will give you enough room to unscrew the nut and lock washer that attaches the stock base, and then you disconnect the power and coaxial lead.
I hear that base is pretty costly new.I may have a used one if you are interested.$25 shipped I figure is fair.
Re: Fuba (KinetikSLC)

Thanks KinetikSLC:
I'll give it a try, and I may get back to you on the base, but I want one with a good amp that'll give me years of service, unlike the one that's in there... So I'm thinking a new one will last the longest before quitting as these things invariably do.
Oh yeah, and *bump* ... Anyone know where to buy a new one and exactly what to buy?
Re: Fuba (diegs)

I replaced mine recently, after an automatic car wash ripped the other one in half. (stupid me, I knew I shouldnt have put it through an automatic wash) Anyway, I just bought one off ebay. (one that had the base included, not just mast.) Anyway, It was an easy install, EXCEPT: At some point they changed the connector a little, so I had to do a little filing to get connector to slide in, but it wasn't a major problem. Works like a charm. I paid about $35 with shipping, but I've seen them since go for less. Good luck. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Fuba (antenna) questions. (diegs)

Funny thing happened with mine. I was drying my car after washing it at the car wash joint... As I was wiping the rear side I hear a hiss and a small plume of white smoke escapes from the antenna. The unit was fried, a small hole was burned at the base where the smoke came from. I was kinda pissed, but it made me laugh.
Re: Fuba (Eric D)

Looks like it came in the mail (ordered from RapidParts)
I'll install it after it stops raining....
Re: Fuba (Eric D)

Eric... Thats a new fuba. Does the plug for amp work on our radios?

Re: Fuba (Zyrod)

I checked mine out, and it looks like it's also new. If I can get it to work, I'll post how.
Looks like it's still raining, though, so I've gotta wait some...
Re: Fuba (diegs)

Just by-pass it. I had bad F.M. reception & no A.M. whatsoever, I did the by-pass mod. on the CCA & both are clear now.
Re: Fuba (KinetikSLC)

As usual, please forgive my extreme ignorance. If I want to replace my fuba instead of simply bypassing it, will I be messing around solely near the base, or is it necessary to replace the entire cable connecting to the radio itself. If I have to replace the entire cable, is this as much of a pain in the a$$ as it sounds like? And will my life be further complicated by the fact that I have an aftermarket radio?
Re: Fuba (diegs)

I installed a new one that I got from http://www.rapidparts.com.
Install was easy with two people (one inside working under the headliner, another outside holding the base.
I get pretty good reception now! A noticeable improvement. We'll see if it gets better when I get a new headunit in a few weeks...
Re: Fuba (diegs)

methinks the FUBA bit stands for ****** up beyond all recognition!!!!!!!!
Re: Fuba (diegs)
