Fuel Filter ? (again)

Just got a Bentley Manual for my birthday, and i was lookin through it on how to replace the fuel filter, cause i was planning to do it soon (someone showed me a really good website). It says:
"Volkswagen specifies that the fuel filter used on gasoline engines is designed to last the life of the car. Replacement is only necessary if the filter becomes clogged due to contaminated fuel or failure to keep the fuel tank sealed."
Is this true? I was under the impression that the filter should be replaced periodically.

or if it rots and gets a hole and starts leaking like mine did at 60 000 km
but i live in canada and we all know the crappy weather we gots here

It would be a life time filter in a perfect world, but these day with crappy gas and everything else, it is worth doing around 60k. I think it was only $20 at VW, and I had it thrown on for $10 at my next oil change while it was already in the ari, although it is an OK Saturday afternoon project...

I changed mine after 50,000 miles and the car felt better, throttle response felt crisper. It could all be in my mind - but for the 10 bucks I spent on the filter it is great piece of mind.

I've been changing mine since april. As a matter of a fact I was changing it today but couldn't figure out how to get up from my chair.

stock fuel filter or the k and n one?...the KnN is more but its reusable and suppose ot be better. anyone know?
