I have a 2000 Jetta 1.8T with a fuel gauge problem. It reads about 1/4 tank more than actual. It doesn't move off Full until 150 miles or so. I checked the archives and several others had this problem. They had it fixed under warranty which I can't do. Has anyone had to pay to have this problem fixed? Any one had the fuel sender changed for any reason? If so, how much did it cost. Thanks.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem (Arin)

had the fuel sender changed, but it was under warranty. I don't know how expensive it is, but it's not difficult according to the service manager. You don't have to drop the gas tank or anything like that. If you're going to have it fixed, call VWofA just for the heck of it since you know others have had the same problem. It may not have as high of an occurance rate of a window regulator or MAF failure, but maybe you can get them to kick down for part of the bill. It's worth a try!
Good luck.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem (Lugnut)

I have this exact problem. Needle does not move for at least 100 miles. However, once it gets low, it becomes more accurate. When the low fuel light comes on, it's right on the mark. However, annoying.
Since this was about the tenth minor problem with my car and it was out of warranty, I wrote VW a letter asking that it be fixed for free. I received a call and Pete said to have it diagnosed as broken and VW will assist in a monetary manner. Driving home that same day, my glove box hinge broke for the second time.
So, the dealer fixes the glove box for free since it was less than a year that they replaced the first one. As far as the fuel gauge, the computer said that it was working just fine. Now, my second grade math says it's broken. VW won't pay, I gave up.
BTW, my car is great despite the annoying things that went wrong, love it.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem (rbenjami)

I am afraid to wait until the light comes on. I reset the trip odo each fill up and go about 300-325 miles at most. Last fill up I put almost 13 gallons in and there was no light yet.

Re: Fuel Gauge Problem (BGJETTA)

The only way I found out that my fuel sender was broken was that fact that I ran out of gas about 5 miles after the light came on, and I was driving in super-economy mode at the time. I had the same initial problems though...mainly the lack of needle movement for the first 100 miles or so. If this is happening to you, drive at your own risk when the light is on!
