Just replaced my exhaust system on my GTI and start it up and start to smell gas.
Look under the car and sure enough she is leaking from the pump region.
Planning on going under the car this evening and was wondering if the leak
isn't an obvious line problem is it the pump itself or maybe the filter is clogged?

Well I had two problems with my fuel pump area...one my inline to the filter was pinched and needed replacement and I was leaking around the fuel pump assembly and needed a simple o ring to my fuel pump. check if the pressure two and from the pump is up to snuff with bentley....then go from there

Could be the fuel pump housing, get some brake cleaner or simple green, clean up around there then look for the leak.

Yup. I experienced that, too. Check the "seam" that runs around the bottom of the housing.

Quick update...Got under the car. Did not have time tonight to take it all apart
but it seems that all of the lines are ok. Cleaned everything up and they are dry.
There does appear to be a small crack on the plastic flange that holds the fuel
pump into the housing. It only seems to leak when under load so maybe it is
the fuelpump o-ring/housing that is leaking. Any other thoughts?

Turn the car on, let it warm up, than turn it off, than back on. If it hesitates you know the pump is straining and there is a leak somewhere. Best bet is to test the pressure put out by the pump.
