Question. What is the white plastic unit above the fuel pump? And what is its purpose? Both hoses come off the gas tank to this unit and the other end goes to the fuel pump. Is it a check valve?

Looks like a fuel reservoir. has one line from tank, one line to the tank, one line to the fuel pump, and one return line from the engine compartment. Doesn't say in the Bentley, but it just looks like what it says.
Tell ya what. I could tell yout o install a new coolant sensor, check timing (now that I realize that you changed a head before this happened), get out the old Bentley, voltmeters and check stuff, but I would take it to a pro. Unless you enjoy tinkering, but even now it is getting out of hand.

Is it a filter?
that's my guess anyways, if there isn't something you know is a filter between the tank and the fuel pump that's probably what it is.

lm actually having problems with the same thing.. ses to make noise a l uc it r go over a ump. l hav ecently chngedthe tank seder andstill geting the anoying sound... anyone ot there know what it is?

Sort of a check valve. It's called an accumulator. Helps keep the system pressurized (prevent the fuel lines from being empty) It is most likely, not bad (Don't think I've ever seen or heard of one that was).
What's wrong with your car?
P.S. your filter is large and metal canister if you're wondering.
