so my car was just totaled(not my fault) and im looking for a new car.
theres a 95 passat vr6 for sale with 129000 miles on it for 3400. the interior looks good and the paint looks new but the sunroof doesnt work.
i was wondering how reliable the engines are and if there are any major problems with these models.

From my experience the engines are extremely reliable. My
first passat i drove until 220k and my current one is up to
160k. You just need to remember they are not new cars and
you may find yourself like myself and every other POAM member
rebuilding your car

This includes everything from coolant hoses
to axels and being pier pressured into spending large amounts of money

They are good cars. I have a '96 VR6 with 125,000 miles and it runs like a champ. There's always things that need replacing but the block itself as long as they are taken care of I've seen them go to 218,000 miles. 3400 doesn't sound to bad either.

alright thanks guys.
im going down again tomorrow to check it out with a friend of mine whose going to school for mechanics. hopefully he doesnt find anything wrong with it and i buy it.

First of all, Welcome to VWVortex.
Secondly... congrats on looking at a Passat.
Some things to look out for would be the faulty coil packs. They are known to get cracks in the backs of them and absorb moisture. This can cause shorts across the wiring, and can end in misfires.
The electrical systems in the Passats can go bad, such as window regulators. But bottom line is that these cars are pretty rock solid. The engines are sound, and very reliable.
Right now, my B4 wagon VR6 has 194k miles on it, and it's going to be needing timing chains here soon. Otherwise, it's a solid engine. I plan to eventually rebuild the head with some nice cams, and eventually do a mild turbo kit to get over 300hp out of it.
These engines will live forever as long as the oil is changed and you have no coolant leaks.

so did you find anything wrong? is it automatic? if so you may want to avoid it or swap in a 5-speed because that is one thing that is notorious. Also door handles, door striker pins both easy fixes. Have you heard it run, as timing chain & tensioners could need replaced.

i just purchased the passat today!
i think i payed a little too much, but i really dont care.

i'm clocking about 220,000 on mine and she runs like a champ. i had to replace a lot, but since i did it and have been slowly repairing and keeping her well maintained as the last owner did not then i know she will run forever. nice color. windsor blue, just like mine. love it. welcome to the club http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif...
