I am sure this has been brought up many times, but here it is once again. I have a 90 G60 sitttin in the backyard and it needs a charger. But anyway, I have an A2 GTi and was thinking of swapping all the Corrado "stuff" into my gti. Is the G60 a solid motor and reliable? The owner b4 took care of it and had some head work done, so thats not an issue. Any feedback would be cool. It will be a daily driver, so thats why I am asking about the motor..
Thanks
Peace

Re: G60 motor questions (Ricks8vGTi)

From what I have heard and seen, the reliability issue has to deal more so with the G60 SuperCharger itself than the engine, pretty much a solid engine itself.
My two cents..... http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: G60 motor questions (Ricks8vGTi)

cool: its a simple bolt on procedure, and if your car is a '90+ the electrics snap right in the fusebox. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
you can keep your gti gearbox if you want and put an upgraded clutch in it ... that'll make a very quick car if you put the regular bolt-ons for the g.
A golf with 200 crank hp will run with a 5.0 with no problems in a race( i've seen it)

one last thing, try to get a limited slip of some sort (quaife or peloquoin being best) you'll need it.

do it!!!!!

Re: G60 motor questions (yellorado)

Thanks yellowado.. My car is a 92, so it looks good so far.. What bolt ons are good for the G60? There are hp upgrade kits I have seen. What parts are included? I will look into a quaife if need be.. DO they make a quaife for my tranny? I think I have an o2o.
Peace

sorry to burst your bubble but, g60 engines are not reliable in any shape or form!! your better off selling it to a friend or even a brother for cheap and start saving for a VR6 conversion. sorry again, and good luck

I have been driving a g60 for the last 11 years, I have not had one major engine failure in that time. Only small problems, alternator, fan, distributor etc. And if I did, hell it is an 11 year old car, things happen. To call it unreliable is pure ca ca and not based on fact IMHO. I am sure others on here with over 200k milles (like myself) feel the same way. VW motors have been known to be well built long lasting motors. Sure the G60 was the weak part, hell my original charger had 140k on it with nothing done to it. I took it off to put on a modified one that only lasted 40k.

Re: G60 motor questions (TBT-PassatG60)

Obviously Wison knows more than the rest of us that have been driving and building G60 motor for some time.

But seriously if you do the proper work and don't take short cuts you will have a very reliable car. You will find that there is a lot of BS on this forum, but there are a few in here that know what they are talking about.

Re: G60 motor questions (Padfan1)

one more thing about that bubble thing... just try to make a mk2 golf with a vr6 in its nose handle
that engine is powerfull, torkey and F°&*ING HEAVY, if you like cutting apexes and taking onramps and stuff, the G is by far a better choice.
i could have swapped a VR6 in my raddo a dozen times if i had wanted to, but i know better
