I am looking to buy a Corrado (my 1st one) in the next couple of months.
I have seen a few on sale and they all have around the same mileage.
Which would would be the better model to go for: the G60 or the VR6? I would like performance and speed (and maybe be able to work up to 220hp or more
if possible for a almost daily drive).
Which would be the better choice? Which is easier to maintain and more reliable?
Any info for a Corrado newbie would help!!!

Re: G60 or VR6??? Help (ja)

g60 offer cheap tunability and the vr's more total power at the cost of weight and a lot more money, but for $500 and on a healthy charger you can easly clean the clock of a VR6 with a G60 but the VR's are more refined and have more total potental http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
G60: for the bugetly minded
Vr6: If you got the money

Re: G60 or VR6??? Help (ja)

Here's my opinion of each version.... I own one of each, so I think I am in a position to give an unbiased reply.
G60 - The elite of the VW pocket rockets - Takes over where the Scirocco left off. Lighter than a VR6, the G60 also combines a front suspension design (less caster than VR6) that promotes faster response in the turns. Other suspension differences include stiffer springs than the Vr6, and a slighlt lower stance at stock ride height. The G60 engine is a better design than the VR6, with the engine itself being more relliable. The supercharger is the weak point in the G60 design, prone to failure if abused/neglected, with varying reports of maximum mileage from a factory unit (70K-150K miles, with 70K closer to the norm). When driving a g60, the engine noise is very noticeable. G60 cars are also cheaper to modify, with performance parts bordering on reasonable $$ amounts.
Vr6- Not just a refined G60. Major engineering changes affect the handling characteristics of the VR6 cars. The "plus suspension" design makes the car more stable in the straights, but requires slightly more steering input for cornering. You can REALLY feel the difference if you drive both platforms back to back. The VR6 springs are noticably softer that the G60 units, and the car feels a bit smoother/less responsive as a result. Small refinements to the exterior combine to give the VR6 a stockier meaner appearance, with later VR6 cars having an updated interior with minor changes to the dash controls, door panels, etc. Vr6 engines had their issues when debuted, and many of the problems uncovered were not addressed till 95, so the corrado did not get to benifit form them. Some common issues include headgasket, timing chain tensioners, cooling system (VR6 cars run HOT!!!... 230 degrees is normal). Performance upgrades for the Vr6 are in the rediculous $$$ range.
With all that said, I drive My G60 every day.... The SLC is a more refined car IMO, but the G60 is just too damn fun to drive.

Re: G60 or VR6??? Help (mpaster)

Hey mpaster wouldn't you say the corner charateristics of the VR6 are due to the extra 200ls in the front. I would think allot of the handeling would be due to a heavy front. With that added weight, I would see why why a softer suspension. More give to bumps, less bent rims, i would think. But eagually so they both are fun cars to drive.

Yes, I would agree that the extra 200lbs contributes a bit to the heavier feel in the Vr6 cars, but it is the caster that makes the biggest difference in the way the two vehicles handle.
some of the characteristics of a vehicle with more positive caster are: better straight line stability at speed, less bump steer, more lift on the inside front corner during a turn, more understeer. These are trade offs though - along with better straight line stability comes less responsive steering, less bump steer means more steering effort is needed for the same effect, etc.

go find two people, one selling a VR6 and one selling a G60.
both in reasonably good condition, drive them, then make your decision. will you seriously base your decision on what we tell you?

Very well put, Mike. I don't think I've ever seen someone lay it down that clearly.
I own a g60 Corrado, and my older brother owns a vr6. I'm looking for something I can be constantly tinkering (not fixing, but playing with), and he's looking for something he can drive more "out of the box" - something he can just walk up to and get decent performance, with a nice ride. I've pulled my tranny, rebuilt my charger, etc etc and I am not afraid to do anything at all to the car myself. He is planning on taking the car somewhere for most maintenance tasks. See the pattern yet? I get enjoyment out of knowing the car inside and out, and doing lots of projects. He gets enjoyment out of owning a unique car that drives well.
Go to http://www.corrado-club.com and you'll have more info at your fingertips than you can handle. As soon as the search is back up, spend some time searching this forum, as well as the vr6 and g60 forums. A lot more of the technical things specific to each of the two cars are discussed in the engine forums, not in this one.

Re: G60 or VR6??? Help (ja)

i would say vr6if you turbo it you can push 275+ HP and it only cost about 7-800 for a turbo VS maintaining a g-60 super charger. a super charger is running about $2G plus to re-build and like $3G to replace. plus if you are like me on the VR6 then when the engine blows you can replace it with any other VR6. I am currently using a 2001 mark 4 jetta engine in mine it only had 7G miles on it. I bought it for $1700

Re: G60 or VR6??? Help (SYKEZ3)

i own a g60. i like to work on my car. in the 7 months i have had it it has been apart for little over a month. Its fun to drive and i like it. my friend has a gti vr6 and its pretty fast (he put a vortek supercharger on it) and its one of those cars that are much more reliable than mine. i havnt had any experience with teh slc so listen to other owners about it. So ya i would drive both a g60 and an slc before i would listen to me.
good luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Thanks again for the info.
I dont want to work on maintaining the car a whole lot (cause I dont have a lot of time), plus I do need something that is reliable.
