Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models

1959 Views 40 Replies 19 Participants Last post by  brent0226
I've seen the Mykado drop-in remotes for the Jetta: it is a cool gadget!
However, you need a free/empty space/switch/button plate on your dashboard: the Jetta GLX model does not have one!!
Anyone have another solution? Having an integrated remote would be great!
How about a Passat sunvisor (the one with Homelink) as a replacement?

I'd like to know to. I think th eproblem is is that the passat interiors are different colours and the visor won't match
Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (bruno_monk)

I thought the Jetta GLX came with HomeLink... oh well.
I looked into the Passat sun visor idea -- it was going to be about CA$500 for it. Sorry... a little too expensive for my tastes.

Where is a good place to check out the drop-in remotes?
Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (evilpat)

I was looking at this a while ago, and I think I remember seeing something that worked off the cigarette lighter...I don't remember where I saw that.

Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (bruno_monk)

Has anyone called the number to see how much it is for a Jetta?
Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (bruno_monk)

I made one. Drill + momentary switch from radio shack + wire + solder
Total cost = <5 bucks.
Now I have a small black button in a blank in my dash that operates the remote behind it. Works great and people are always like ohh what's that.

Bet that's not cheap! Someone call.
Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (Silver Jetta 1.8T)

Why don't YOU call? Shy to talk to people?
It's $75 bucks, anyway (a package consisting of the transmitter itself plus door control terminal. you need one if your garage opener uses rolling code or a similar signal encoding feature).

Check out your local dealer. I picked a pamphlet that had advertisements for Factory OEM Sunvisors w/ homelink....and I believe it was for the jetta....

So you actually have an original transmitter behind the dash and your button just operates that one?
I would like an extra remote for our garage doors, but they're expensive and UGLY! They might as well just be as big as the entire visor. An aftermarket controller that fits in the car and is hopefully cheaper would be nice.
Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (Gee Spoolin)

ok I had a remote for my sears garage door opener. I took the cover off of the remote and found the button that was programed my door.
Then I looked at the button for the leads on either side of it (which are connected when you press the button). To test those were right I took a short piece of insulated wire (don't feel like getting shocked) and touched it to the 2 leads going into the switch and it activated my garage door. So I knew those were the 2 wires / leads that the switch used.
Then to make sure it fit I took the ENTIRE casing off of the remote pulled out a dash blank and saw that it easily through the hole in the dash. Now were in business! If yours dosen't fit you can see if your garage door opener company makes a pocket remote which are signifficantly smaller. I was lucky and my full sized fit fine.
Now I went to radioshack and bought a small momentary pushbutton (black to match the dash, radioshack people should be able to help you pick one out).
Now you'll want to cut the wire atleast 6" long and two pices of it, dosen't matter on color or anything, mine are both black.
Then I soldered one wire each to the leads on the remotes. So if i touched the other ends of the wires togeather it activated my garage door.
Ok at this point I looked at the packaging and found the exact size the hole had to be in the dash blank for the switch to fit. I then drilled that size hold in the center of the dash blank. At this point I had to connect the button to the dash blank BEFORE I soldered it on due to how my button connected to the dash blank.
Then I soldered the other ends of the wires to the button. And that part was done.
The one issue I hit was the battery for my remote was supporoted by the now removed body of the remote. So what I had to do was strip some small pieces of wire and solder them to where the battery terminals used to connect and wedge the batter between them. So the wire was like a small circle. And I used duct tape to secure the batter in place

Tested the remote, shoved it in my dash and have loved it ever since!
I like this because it is guarrantted to work with your garage door whereas some of those universal ones don't!
If you guys want better instructions send me an IM and sometime between now and monday I'll write up better ones and possible take pics.

Re: Garage Door Remotes for GLX Models (landrumdh)

I did this about 3 years ago in mine...
Works great... ran the wire down to the 'hidden' compartment by the front seat passenger's right ankle... (where the hood release would be on UK spec cars...) and soldered an 1/8th-inch plug onto it.
Took the remote apart, drilled a hole for a 1/8th-inch socket, and wired the contacts across the terminals for the switch. (Don't worry about getting shocked!!! -LOL!!!)
The advantage to doing it this way is that if I put the car in for service, I can unplug the remote and take it woth me, to use in the rental car. -It also prevents anyone cloning the remote while the car's in the shop...

My garage door opener fits in that small compartment on the top left of the glovebox. When im coming up to the driveway all I do is pop the glove box and push the button and the entire ugly unit is conceled away from everything.

Yeah your what inpsired me to do mine
But I couldn't get in touch with you about doing the jack part and I couldn't figure out where to connect the plug. I'm not worried about somebody at my dealership cloning my remote. And I really DON'T need it b/c I don't park in the garage, it's just nice being able to open it so I don't have to fiddle with the keypad to get in when I have books / laptop / other poop with me.

landrumdh, thanks so much for the well written instruction. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Please do post pics of your install when possible.
VWAddict: what kind of button is that (in your pic)? I like your button as they're square and is of the proper size. Where did you get it and how much? And how the heck did you drill a square hole on the factory's "dummy button"? I note that the button is flush mounted with the dummy button. How did you do that? Please let me know. Thanks.
