Gas tank leaking...

So just before my move to Reading on the 2nd my car decides its going to spit my $3 a gallon gasoline all over the ground, now as you can imagine this is not my idea of a good time. So still unemployed and home for the weekend I decided to siphon the gas out of my tank and drop it to find the leak. During the siphoning I noticed that the seal between the in-tank pump and the tank itself was slightly ripped. Now this very well may be the problem, but if you've ever looked at the top of the gas tank then you've noticed that the pump sits in a recess. Now knowing that the gas was leaking down both sides of the tank when it was full I thought, "It can't be that", so today I dropped the tank. Once I got it out I blocked off all of the openings, covered it with soapy water, and then used a vacuum to blow air in the filler tube. While this did make the tank blow up like a balloon, it did not reveal any leaks, not even at the gasket! So whats going on here? I checked all of the hoses and they looked fine, could it actually be the gasket? Are there any other ways of checking for leaks before I go putting this back in the car?

It could be in the box that the other fuel pump sits in.

Isn't that located further forward than the tank though? Like I said I noticed it dripping down the sides of the tank.

My car did the same thing. It was dripping down from all over the sides of the tank. I pondered too" where is it coming from?
Even though the pump sits in a recess, with enough fuel leaking out it will poor over the sides of the tank. In my cars case, the screw on cap was just loose. Check this again. Replace the seal just cause your there. Hope this helps. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

On mine, the ventilation hose on the top shrank with age. so it became too short to seal properly and would leak when the tank was full.
