the topic sums it up.first of all this is my 84 4-door jetta. i noticed a small leak of gas from my filler neck of the tank and i cant seem to tell where its exactly coming from. i took the hose off and it look ok. i could not see any holes or cracks but i applied some 2 part epoxy to the neck and retested i thought i had it but after starting to fill up i noticed it leaking good while filling so i stoped and still cant tell exactly when its coming from. its not high just seems to be at the seam from the tank to the neck. so what should i do? how should i repair it? replace it? that looks like a pain. and with a 18 year old car i dont want to if i dont have too. any ideas???

I'm up against a leaky tank in my new daily-driver. I'll probably bite the bullet and go for a new tank from JC Whitney. I'm going to pull the tank out of one of my parts cars and check it out. If its good, I'll put it in, otherwise, I'm going for the new tank (~$250 from JCW).

its definately not a rusted filler neck ???
and petrol running down neck and collecting at tank ??
i think you mean the hose that connects filler-neck to tank ?

i thought it was the hose also but upon further investigation and new clamps it must be the metal neck coming from the tank there are no holes that i can see but it just makes no sense. thanks for replying

still not sure exactly what you mean !!!
the filler neck going from petrol cap , down wheel arch ,to tank is definately ok ?
the hose connecting this to tank
, jjust replace .
so i take it you mean tank connection ??? if so , do the test below
i'd change the hose as a matter of course once you've even looked at it never mind touched it !!

remember how old this part is !!
to do a tank "leak test"
rub chalk all over tank on outside
fill with parrafin ,
wait for damp spots in the chalk !!!!!!!
parrafin will find the smallest crack or hole not visible to the human eye .
thisshould be even easier for you , as the suspecte leak is near to tank filler , you can just chalk this area , and rub a soaked cloth on inside through the filler hole .
