Also.. after you remove the rear and seperate the emblem from the backing... do you need to sand the backing down?? or is it fine as is??
What did you guys use to stick the backing and the emblem back on the car?
and as stated above... how do you remove the front emblem?? can you seperate the chrome emblem from the plastic?? if not thats ok.. i've got some tape to mask it off with.

Re: Getting ready to color match!!! How do you remove front emblem???>> (Rave'nGTi)

I'm sure others will give better tips and brief how-tos. I cheaped out when I did my front and rear emblems. The front emblem.. is self explainatory once you take off the grille and look behind it. My 01 Gti is just full clips, its fairly easy popping those off with another friend with his or her extra set of hands. I used a flathead screwdriver. As for the sanding.. I just totally skipped that step and just used dishwasher soap/rinse/dry. Both finishes are holding up just fine. Except for an occasional tiny chip or two on the front emblem. When that happens I just touch those up and looks good as new.

yea dani, you can separate the chrome part from the emblem. if you're looking for a black emblem i have one that fits a golf sitting in my garage. let me know.
its just a bunch of tabs, once you remove the entire emblem, you will see what I mean. good luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Just snip the plastic rivets from the back of the rear badge and the chrome and backing will separate.
No need to sand. You can, but I've found the end result looks pretty much the same.

i don't think it would be too easy. it's really hard to pry it off from the front of the car. i wanted to do that too and ended up chipping some of the emblem with my flat head screwdriver. i just bit the bullet and took off the grille and it was alot easier. i would recommend removing the grille.

I doubt you will be able to get the emblem off w/o removing the front grill. It snaps in place and must be released from behind. Removing the grill is not hard once you undo the hood release lever.

Re: Getting ready to color match!!! How do you remove front (Mike VR6)

to get it out (2001. should work on 2001+.. 2001- is different) (careful not to scratch the grill)

location of 3 notches

once apart

the circles are the notches you need to pop from the back of the emblem to get the chrome off.

as far as the backing. i trimmed mine down.

you can kinda see what it looks like (too lazy to look for a good after pic. and my thumbnail pages are screwed.)

Re: Getting ready to color match!!! How do you remove front (JoeP3000)

i read that wrong. the back had about 5 little plastic rivets. you have to drill or cut them out (i used needle nose pliers) after that you can just pull the chrome off.
the major thing w/ the rear emblem is the doublesided tape that's behind the emblem. i just took mine off last weekend to spray it black and i had a hard time getting the double sided tape off. (it's more rubber than it is tape) i did a pretty nice job of scratching the paint. definantly use a blow drier and heat it up before you try to get it off. my original plans were to shave the rear of the back emblem so the hatch actually showed through, but with the scratches it would have looked like crap ( trimming the rear emblem is about 10x's more work than the front )
i just went to target and picked up some weather proof doublesided tape to stick the rear emblem back on. ( i probably should have used locktite or glue to secure the emblem to the backing before putting it back on.. but i just stuck the two pieces back together )
no pics though.. i was rushing things ( bad idea) it came out decent though.

Re: Getting ready to color match!!! How do you remove front (flipp)

Well I'm halfway done with the rear emblem!
I didnt even have to use floss... I just pulled on the corner a bit and the whole thing peeled right off. So much for the sticky tape VW uses

I didnt want to bother with drilling out the plastic rivets and then sticking the chrome piece back on... So with the help of a friend from the body shop I carefully and thoroughly masked the chrome VW off.
I've got 5 coats of color done... and here when that drys I'll start about 4 coats of clear. I'll have to go track down some really good 3M tape tomorrow to stick it back on with http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I didnt realize the dent in the trunk was so big!!!! Shame on VW!
