Ghetto riggin 101: Sandwich adapter fed multi-pass oil cooler

Another rig for all of you fellow vortexers...
I thought I'd post this after I read the dual radiator fan install post earlier.
If you don't have an oil cooler, or got a leaky oil-to-coolant cooler, dump it for this DYI sandwich adaptor fed multiple pass oilcooler. I'm sure someone else did this already, but I've thought of it myself after I saw a Setrab oil cooler for $250+ and then saw parts that looked identical... at an aircooled shop
They sell a kit for aircooled VWs that allows them to use standard watercooled VW oil filters (instead of the old screen filters). Then, you can either get an oil cooler they sell there too, or just make one yourself by cutting up an old A/C condenser core as you wish... just make sure that the hoses are fit for the application and can withstand the pressure.
Good oil cooler is a must, especially if you sit in traffic a lot or you're going turbo. This adapter also features a spring-loaded pressure relief valve in case the cooler would get stuck in some mysterious way.
Here's a pic of the adapter (made in U.S.A., btw!):

...and the cooler I bought for my Cabrio project (the Golf sports the condenser ghetto rig) - came with hoses and fittings, ready to install:

Enjoy... and let me know how yoo likey cookin rice when yoo can run yo enjun coolah

the how to is pretty self explanitary, one feed and one return line. it works on all dubs and on all cars, but i really dont think there is a need for them unless u are running a hot turbo setup, or u have really high oil temps. in the summer on a hot hot day, i will mabye see 228F sitting in traffic, i noramally see 200-212 just everyday driving

Ok, I'm confused. YOu obviously bought that oil filter part, but from where and how much?

Nice Idea, I likes...

ok im back on it too then, if connects where the oil filter goes and both lines are used for the oil cooler what filters the oil? I don't know much about an oil cooler except the self explanatory part but does it filter alos?

I installed a mocal oil cooler set up like that one with the sandwich plate on my jetta. I think that its pretty good. The lines are braided ss and it has a thermostat in the sandwich plate that opens the cooler when the oil temp gets high. Before installing it I would get up to 250 F while autocrossing. Now when I'm pushing it it never gets above 205 F. So I think it worth it. Plus mine was free cause my dad had it from his dub days
and I may have another one lying around thats going on my rocco...

The filter screws into the bottom of the sandwich, just like on the old fixture (cooler). The only difference is that the oil is cooled by air, rather than the engine coolant like on the original.
Re: Ghetto riggin 101: Sandwich adapter fed multi-pass oil cooler (vdubturbo)

If you have an oil-to-coolant cooler, you remove the nut holding the cooler, slide it off, put this puppy on w/rubber O-ring facing up, reinstall the nut, tighten.
On cars that came w/o a cooler you thread the nut/ attachment you see in the 1st pic (it has an inside thread on the end that you dont see) over the union that goes between the oil filter bracket and the filter itself.
There are brass fittings with oil line nipples that go inside the threads on the side of the adapter (you can see them inside the bag). As far as positioning the oil cooler, I have mine in front of the radiator, but you can position it anywhere you'd like / anywhere the lines will let you.
I got this particular set up at SoCal Imports, Long Beach, CA (you know, Snoop Dogg's hood). The phone is (562)633-4979
Ask for "oil filtersandwich adapter" part # 115 247, i think it was $20 (I've got their catalog in front of me but I've lost the price sheet). They have a variety of oil coolers, from $30 (6pass - the one pictured) to 72plate coolers, those are a bit more $$. I had a return when I went over there and no receipt, so I got store credit, hence I grabbed the cooler kit. You can just use an A/C condenser as I mentioned above (I've done so on my Golf, it's been working good for 2+ years now, my temps are contantly below 100'C = under 212'F) and get some Stainless steel braided hose from them, they sell it by the foot (1/4" 3/8" 1/2") - I picked some up for my radiator-to-overflow tank since that one always gets battered

Oh, and if you call them... this is the best place to get H4 headlamps (part#HQ 6014). They're not Hella but they are $11 including a bulb, so ha! beat that... every now and then they even have the ones with driving light bulbs in stock.
I'm glad you guys can use this!
Honduh guys never share their "secrets"... we do http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
