i'm not buying the whole grand lux crock haha. ahhh! oh well, not a big deal, it was worth a shot, right?
i want to move to canada just for the CL's!!!
there's one i see around town sometimes. the first time i saw it i thought, "hmm... steelies on a GTi? might be a CL, nah what are the chances..." then i noticed the antenna, and the red tails... so i look on the back, sure enough, a CL from a montreal dealership. i flipped and my friend had no idea what was going on haha. anyhow, that's somewhat unrelated!

"i" is for injection. The original GTi (circa 1976 or so) used a high compression, fuel injected 1.6, while most other Golf's (and cars for that matter) had carburetors.

Really? You mean all of VW's water-pumpers were carbed? Or just the majority of them? Or certain markets or just the very base models?

Re: GL? GLS? GLX? (Air_Cooled_Nut)

VW started using fuel injection on its Type3's back in 1968. The bus got it in 1972 (I believe, maybe 73) and the Beetle got it in '75.
As far as water pumpers go, in the late 70's, a lot of water pumpers had carbs, especially in Europe. In fact you can get a carb on your VW as late as the mid 90's in Europe. Here in the US, to meet tougher emission standards, most water pumpers had fuel injection, although the early dashers, sciroccos and rabbits were available with carbs. I think the last vws to have carbs in the US were the early 80's special edition Rabbits, 2bbl Zenith, but I could be wrong.
The injection on the early GTI's were special cause they squeezed 110 hp out of 1.6, not bad considering its an 8-valve with mechanical injection.
