My uninformed knee-jerk reaction to this has been that it's another consequence of so much reliance on multiple suppliers for many of these OEMs. The HVAC dials need a separate microprocessor from the shifter because they were developed separately by different suppliers, and so they each need a chip with its own place in its own supply chain. The meaningful advantage that Tesla actually has IMO is the vertical integration through the electronic stack in their vehicles. You can reduce the number of separate chips and sub-assemblies needed if you can integrate them all and rely on a few larger processors.

Maybe Tesla is hurt just as badly by the current situation, I don't know. But it seems like evidence that some OEMs have strained the real-world benefit of so much outsourcing to suppliers.

Hardly. Society thinks that convenience is a right at this point.
I see that. I also see 1400 dollars plus labor to replace a tesla 3 screen. I guess that is progress unless you have to replace the screen on a regular basis

Maybe we will go back to cars without fancy electronics/screens etc., but likely not.
It's not just about fancy screens and infotainment. You need those chips for the ECU, ABS, Traction Control, and all sorts of essential vehicle functions these days. You can't just get rid of ABS or other features to work around it- they are federally mandated. Likewise, complex ECUs are required to meet modern emissions mandates- you can't sell a carbureted in a new car in 2021. EVs are no better because they need computers to manage the batteries and motors.
