The ADAC Touring Car Racing series is kicking off its inaugural season tomorrow, and six Golf GTI TCRs will be in the running. Judging by the preseason testing, the Golfs should be fighting for podiums.

As we reported last week , the Golfs set blistering times around the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, where the first round of the season will start this weekend. Team Racing One’s Benjamin Leuchter even set the fastest lap in one of the test sessions.

“Our tests have been very good,” said Martin Kohlhaas, Racing One’s team principal, after the tests. “It is a really fast car and looks rather fabulous. We are well positioned for the first race.”

The six Golf GTI TCRs will be racing for teams Racing One, JBR Motorsport, and Engstler, who are running four cars this season.

The drivers are Benjamin Leuchter (Racing One), Kai Jordan (who may be joined by another driver on team JBR Motorsport), Daniel Conrad, Mike Halder, Tom Lautenschlager, and Tim Zimmermann (all racing for Liqui Moly Team Engstler).

Liqui Moly Team Engstler is perhaps the most experienced of the three teams running GTI TCRs. Founded in 1996 by driver Franz Engstler, the team has been successfully competing in touring car racing around the world ever since.

Team Engstler’s greatest success came in 2011, when they finished first among independent teams in the World Touring Car Championship. The team is considered a breeding ground for young talent.

Free practice at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben starts tomorrow, for the first round of the ADAC TCR series . Qualifying will begin early on Saturday morning, followed by the first race of the season at noon on the same day. The weekend ends on Sunday with Race 2 five minutes before noon.
