Golf or Jetta?

I'm car shopping and have pretty much narrowed it down to a jetta or a golf. (96 or newer, cause i want air bags) So besides the different shapes, what are the real differences between the two? Is the golf going to handle better w/suspension mods or the jetta? Or since they are on basically the same frame...is it a moot point? Basically I'm just lookin' for some ideas as to which I should go with based on which will perform better overall...thanks.

If you get the Jetta, I would only consider the VR6 (Extra Weight). Either way (Golf or Jetta) you are making the right decision!

If you're going to get a Golf, get a GTI VR6 b/c it's got a 6 cylinder engine in it as opposed to the regular Golf which has a 4 cylinder engine in it. Like Happy said, if you get the Jetta, get the GLX VR6, as it has a 6 cylinder in it. Both will be about the same in performance, it just comes down to a personal preference. Do you like sedans or hatches better?

also take into account how the car will be used
im a college student and a 2dr GTI wasnt really practical for me
so i ended up with a jetta, and could not be happier
performance is basically the same....its up to personal preference
but if you want me to tell you what to get
go for a jetta....the gtis/golfs outnumber us here

i love GTI's... but the 2dr thing is a hassle sometimes for me too... and i've liked jetta's all along... there was something about the 4dr golfs i didnt like at first, although they're alright now.

but still, i love my jetta...
2.0L slow and all

go for a jetta weirdly enuf i had the choice and because i had a camaro before I hated 2 door and so did all my friends. SO GET a jetta
get a 97 or a 96.5 you can tell if it is a 96.5 by the antenna if its on the fender they suck the rear mounted ones are the 6.5 ones i got a 96 and i shaved my antenna and got a rear one looks alot better

I have a 95 Jetta VR6, just bought it a couple of months ago and it has driver and passenger side air bags, I've waited a long time to own one of these cars, it's like a dream come true. Now it's time to do some mods

the year (96.5+) means little. my 95 GL has 2 airbags, 4 wheel ABS, and all kinds of lil ish like that. and the antenna thing, the roof mounts were only on GTs, GLXs, and treks, not 96.5

I went from a '97 Golf to a '99 Jetta GLX. I loved my hatchback but you can't beat the trunk room in the Jetta, especially if you are married with children like myself.
