It would be silly to have dedicated winter tires on when it is no longer winter, but you have a good eye.
Goodyear no longer makes the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 for the 18” GTI wheel. That was an awesome tire at a bargain price. Because it was discontinued I looked at Michelin and ended up taking advantage of a 4th of July sale and ordered some Sport 4S tires. Really expensive, but I couldn’t come across a good alternative to the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3s. Anyway while looking at tires I saw Michelin’s new all season CrossClimate tire. It supposedly handles awesome in the snow as well as in curves in summer conditions. Perfect tire for a Golf R. https://www.michelinman.com/tires/cross-climate/cross-climate-plus.html
Take a look at the tread. This is what the Golf R has on.
By looking at the hill /small mountain in the background, I would say the photos were taken in Central or Southern Germany.
True, the screw on/bolt on pieces to make it look similar to the Golf 7.5 R are highly suspect. Hopefully they remove them for the final version. I think it would look 10 times better and more aggressive with them gone.
Does look a little better in blue. Not digging the big spoiler in back - hopefully that is optional or not offered, just looks cheap and tacked on IMO.
I personally like the spoiler. It looks better than the spoiler on the Golf 8 GTI and differentiates itself from the GTI just like the spoiler on the Porsche Cayman GT4 differentiates itself from a standard Cayman. I had a spoiler that raised at speed on my Corrado and can appreciate a nice spoiler. It’s safe to say owners of Golf Rs will push their vehicles harder than GTI owners so extra down force is appreciated...
I'm still on the fence, mechanically it doesn't sound much different then the MK7/7.5. I only am turned on by the seats, but really not very excited about the rest of the interior. As in I am content with my MK7.5.
The front end I still have a problem with. I am fine with everything else, then I feel hesitation on saying much about it. Maybe still needs time to grow. It might be because it is so dramatic of a change from the MK5 -> MK6 -> MK7 -> MK7.5, that I feel uncomfortable about it.
So as it stands right now, I retain my 6MT and for a few hundred $$$s I can get the MK8 seats and not have buyers remorse.
Yeah, when I had to replace my 2017 GTI Sport I went with a 2019 GTI SE because it was the most affordable GTI with the better headlights. I bought that instead of a Golf R because a new Golf 8 R was on the way. When the Golf 8 R comes out I’m getting rid of the GTI and going with the Golf 8 R.
There had been speculation of a performance bump up to 330 hp. We know the interior has been completely revised. You’re right the new seats for the Golf 8 GTI and Golf R look awesome. I thought it was lame that the seats in the last R weren’t sportier. Remember how much sportier the seats on the original Golf R32 were? The new seats make me think about R32 seats.
I had a 2 door Golf 6 TDI and when the Golf 7 GTI came out I didn’t like them. I thought the roof was too flat and the lines were too straight. I changed and now much prefer the GTI 7/7.5 to the 6.
VW Vortex pined over the third generation Scirocco. VW never brought it over to the US. Production of the Scirocco in Portugal has long since ceased, but I see the Scirocco every time I look at the Golf 8. The hood is lower and more streamlined like the Scirocco and the roof line angle with less head space for the rear is definitely Scirocco.
If I was making the perfect Golf 7/7.5 GTI I would use the rear exhaust and bumper from the 7.5 GTI (I prefer the idling sound) the plaid seats, the xenon lights from the golf 7, the front end/bumper from the GTI 7 and the sunroof from my GTI 7.5.
Everyone has preferences and I am sure the Golf 8 R will grow on us once it is debuted. The good thing about the GTI and Porsche 911 is that they never made any radical design changes so in my opinion all generations of the GTI and all generations of the 911 look good
I don't dislike it. I mean it is slowly growing on me, and now that the embargo must have been lifted on the GTI, we are getting to see more different angles of it.
I will assume here in the states, we won't get that exhaust, and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't get the cross-drilled rotors either.
You are probably right but if VW USA is thinking straight, they should make it available, even as an option! They just need to stop depriving us of the good stuff

A) What's up with the watch in two pictures - I mean, really - on the ground?!
B) Highly doubt that akrapovic exhaust will be an option in NA.
C) Also, is that a NA plate bracket?
D) VW wheels have typically been getting worse with each generation - these are truly heinous. This car would benefit from a more classic design.
I saw those wheels.....seriously?!? The original Cadiz wheels and the upgrade wheels that were offered on the 2018 in NA are so much better than this, what were they thinking :screwy:, those wheels are horrendous.
Plus the steering wheel, more glossy black....GREAT! I love the steering wheel in the 2019, the honey comb texture surrounding the logo is a really nice touch / update to the MKVII steering wheel, I don't like this new steering wheel at all except for the touch of blue to it, the shape of the centre isn't good either.
To me, the MKVIII definitely looks better in Blue, but still not a fan of the new look...
Well, obviously they know normal potential customers prefer that look. Also, have you not noticed the bulk of the wheel styles used by most other makes?
VW would be fools to not offer the wheels designs customers want. The offer nice looking wheels.
