Well, obviously they know normal potential customers prefer that look. Also, have you not noticed the bulk of the wheel styles used by most other makes?
VW like other companies does study groups and tastes change with the decades/new generations be it wheels or interiors..
Wait until the launch on 11-4-2020 and then we should finally know how the front end should look as well as the wheels. As was already pointed out, the wheels shown on the white Golf R in this thread are standard Golf wheels. The German VW website lists these as “Bergamo” and are one of 6 different wheels the standard Golf can be ordered with in Germany...
Cool fact: On the GTI Sport model that was offered in the US for 2017 only, we received GTD wheels. Those were cools wheels, but took a long time to clean the brake dust off of with the open design.
VW didn't bother to offer the Pretoria's as an option for the 2016 Golf .:R at first but they did later on as a no charge option and that was only because of a shortage of the Cadiz wheels (Serious, that's not a joke) and Vortex members that had ordered cars were scrambling to get their order changed to get the Pretoria's. Also, IIRC VW Canada never bothered to update their web site to make the Pretoria's an actual option in the configurator for the for the 2016. Speaking for myself, I would have paid extra to get the Pretoria wheels instead of the Cadiz on my 2016, but VW didn't bother to make it an option and that caused supply problems down the road and cost them a bit of extra money for not offering a wheel design their customers really wanted......that's a little bit foolish I would say?
I agree...they do offer some nice looking wheels, I love the Pretoria's and the wheels shown on the 2021 .:R unveil look awesome, but those wheels in spy shots of the Lapaz blue tester are truly terrible
I'm a big fan of the MKVII so I might be a little bias, but seems like a fair bit of MKVII owners here on Vortex aren't that impressed with the MKVIII so far.
I don't hate the new look and the exterior is slowly growing on me, but the new interior interface / dash seems like a bad idea and that's why I traded in my 2016 for a 2019 so I won't be in any rush and can wait and see what the MKVIII face lift shapes up to be in a few years
C) Also, is that a NA plate bracket? Isn't it obvious that it is the USA sized bracket?
D) VW wheels have typically been getting worse with each generation - these are truly heinous. This car would benefit from a more classic design.... I would certainly disagree. Wheel designs are based on what potential customers want. Not selected with no marketing research. BTW, did you not know wheels can be replaced? .
A) I think it's obvious? But if you read between the lines, the question was eluding to the fact that an NA plate bracket on a european mule is unusual, and perhaps, someone around here knows why. I do, for instance know that there are North American shaped euro plates, or perhaps, this car is in north america or is destined for north american testing? It was a conversation starter...
B) I'm suspect as to whether or not companies conduct market research on which wheels customers like better. I can tell you this, wheel design is dictated more by cost and adherence to corporate design language, more than anything else. You may disagree with my subjective opinion that these are ugly, but out of the respondents here, you can see that I'm not alone - and if we can assume that we're here because we may be potential customers... then we're either a) outliers or b) weren't contacted by "marketing research". BTW, did you not know wheels can be replaced? That's a bit of a false argument. People will always replace wheels, I doubt that has much to do with the look of factory wheels themselves, but rather the desire for individuality, sizing, performance, etc.
But really, your sarcastic answers aren't helpful or positive.
Like, who pissed in your corn flakes that day when you responded?
