Re: Good Auto-X Rims???? (k2bum)

You definitely want the lightest wheels possible. As long as 16's are allowed in the class you want to run in, go for em, as they will have less sidewall and tend to be stiffer. 15's will usually work just fine too as long as you have a decent tire on them. Like I said above, the lighter the wheel the better. you want to minimize your unsprung weight (easiest way to describe is weight being driven which includes axles, brakes, wheels, tires, etc.). This will make your car feel lighter on its feet, so to speak. Something like say Volks are a good example. Very light and very strong. Any questions, feel free to email me.

Does anyone know the weights of Panasport alloys? I don't think they list them on their website.

panasports don't weigh much at all and they're very strong. another good wheel maker is kosei. you can get 16x7s that only weigh 13lbs. and they're stylish too. grassroots motorsports has a lot of good wheel tech stuff occasionally.

Re: Good Auto-X Rims???? (a90quattro)

Panasports are good wheels, but they arent that light.
If you are looking for light, nothing beats JDM wheels. We are talking 8 lbs for a 15" rim. 8lbs is pretty common now, Mugen MF-10, Spoon, Desmond (same as spoon), SSR Competition, Advan RG, Volk Rays TE-37, etc etc.
European rims are stylish and strong, but nothing is lighter than the latest generation of Japanese forged wheels...
oh and PS they are expensive.
PPS for auto-x I would go steelie, heh-heh. $35 each.

here are panasports:

I believe they are quite light as well. They have several other styles as well.

Re: Good Auto-X Rims???? (3WheelGTi)

Here is a site with a little more info on Panasport wheels, I've also heard they are friendly to talk to. I too am looking for strong, light wheels for this season. I think I am going to stay with 15's, a little cheaper for the wheels and tires. Am considering the Kosei, Panasport and OZ Superleggera, wish the SSR Comps came in 15x7 4x100. Has anyone considered going to a smaller (13" or 14") combination?

IM user RandyWalters. Randy knows more about Autocross than anyone I've ever talked to. He goes SMALL on his '85 GTI--13x8's I want to say, with 225/13's. Shortens the final drive ratio, which is good for autoX.

Re: Good Auto-X Rims???? (SeattleGLI)

Jon, I emailed Randy about a month ago, asking him several questions re: his setup and autox thoughts. Never heard a word from him. I was a little disappointed that he didn't give any sort of reply, even if just to tell me to address the issues on the Vortex. You're right, he does appear to be knowledgeable, just wish I could tap into that knowledge base.
He is one of the reasons I asked the question above about going smaller. My problem with that is we will probably be running on bigger courses this year and we were bumping up against the top of second gear last year! Dropping the final drive isn't always a good thing.

I think 13" rims are fine for racing (people think low-profiles are necessary, um ever see an F1 tire?) but the problem you run into is that you can only get slicks and drag radials for them. What kind of autoX do you want to do?
hi end street tires pretty much begin at 15" unfortunately. There are maybe one or two at 14", and no good DOT tires below that....

I autocrossed with Randy a few years back when he drove up from L.A. to the Bay Area for a 2 day championship event. He's definitely one of the best auto-X driver I'ved seen. He had his '85 "Silver" GTi and was running Panasport 13x7 or 13x8 wheels with BF Goodrich R1, 215-50-13 (no longer available). He always insisted on running a thick front sway bar oppose to the small or no sway bar rule. It worked for him and I can't argue with that. I can't remember what bars and what size he was using. It's too bad he hasn't responded to you yet, I would try again. He gave me very useful tips.

Those panasport FC prorally's are actually pretty heavy.. i used to have them on my GTI.. its heavy because its a rally wheel and not a road race wheel.

Re: Good Auto-X Rims???? (quazar311)

Larry, I think he doesn't use the Vortex much. Are you sure you have a current email address for him? I had an old one for him I'd be happy to give you, but I haven't tried to email him in a long time. He and I used to have similar GLI's before he sold his to Mike and Kristen Potter. He autox'ed that car as well as his GTI, but he's mainly moved on to his 325is now.

Unless you're going Street Touring or Street Modified, don't waste your money on 15" or 16" rims. Go directly for 13" rims - 7" or 8" width depending on your class restrictions.
I ran a set of 15s (195/50-15 Yokomama A008s) many years ago and liked them well enough BUT I tried a set of 13x8s with Hoosier Autocrossers!! Suffice it to say that a night and day difference in an understatement. If you need further proof, just look at the wheels that all the National champions are running - 13" and W-I-D-E.
For strong rims, look towards Revolution or Panasport. For light rims, Keizer - super light but (reportedly) made from 2-3 layers of tin foil.
