$2,900 for that nonsense?

Car's had a rough, rough life. Lots of bad panel/headlight alignment up front, possible poor color-match on the hood/fenders/bumper, cracked engine cover, airbag/ABS lights on, missing wheel center caps, really dirty inside and out, etc. etc.

No thanks.

But I mean, if you're in the market for a vehicle that simply must have an auto-reverse cassette player, worth a look.

Counterpoint:

The next cheapest TDI I can find is $6k.

Do I think I can spruce this car up to 10/10 shape for less than $3k? Humm...maybe.

Not sure what you are talking about. Plasti-dip doesn't cost that much.

I see a lot of TDIs in my area posted on CL going for what I think is kind of ridiculous. I know TDIs hold their value pretty well, but a car isn't just dependent on its drivetrain. If the body is rusted, clearcoat ruined, interior destroyed, etc. it's not a car worth over $2k, let alone $1.5k, with over 200k miles on it. See this a lot with the MKIV platform (99-05 Jetta/Golf.)

220k miles, will need a timing belt, interior is cloth and likely obliterated for this model year, clutch probably never changed: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5068501273.html $3000

238k miles, plastidipped exterior, different color door cards, hub caps, lucas additive in the manual transmission fluid. In fact, all of the fluids posted in that photo are wrong, the Prestone coolant, the Mobil 1 75w-90 is most likely GL5 spec when it is supposed to be GL4, hydraulic fluid for the power steering isn't VW spec and this is a model year with really picky power steering: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5035126583.html $4900

220+k miles, leaks coolant, needs a waterpump, paint is gone, rust spots all over the hood, "interior has quite a bit of staining": http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/5081239721.html $2500

Maybe my standards are too high, but none of those are worth $1.5k to me.
