I'm looking to build a machine this Xmas. It got pushed back from Thanksgiving because all of the stuff that's been going on at home but with my laptop's HDD about to go again (I have a new replacement (free) on order via my school) this is why you never buy a first release of ANYTHING.
Anyways I need a good video card to compliment the rest of the system below.
But I'm ready for a real desktop computer.
I've figured out the rest of what I'm getting
IBM 40GB ULTRA-ATA/100 IC35L040AVER07/PN#07N6654 7200RPM 8.5MS 2MB BUFFER (Bare drive)
PIONEER DVD-106S 16X-DVD EIDE SLOT INTERNAL #106S(Bare drive)
CREATIVE LABS SOUNDBLASTER LIVE! PCI DOLBY DIGITAL 5.1 SB0100 (White box)
SAMSUNG 19"/18V SYNCMASTER 950B 1600X1200 68HZ TCO99 MPRII(I'll get the P series if it comes back in stock)
ENLIGHT 7237/340 MIDDLE TOWER W/340W (PENTIUM 4 READY) ATX POWER SUPPLY 4x5.25" 2x3.5" 1x3.5"(hidden)
ABIT KG7 Motherboard Specs BUNDLE W/ COOLING FAN & (AMD ATHLON XP 1600+; MWAVE 256MB NON-ECC PC2100; ASSEMBLE/TEST BUNDLE)(I've been burned by short CPU warranties before this should take care of that problem)
MS NATURAL KEYBOARD PRO PS2/USB W/19-HOT KEYS (Retail)
TOTAL : $876.43
I'm looking to spend 1k + shipping and handling so I have about 130 bucks to play with here.
1. Don't bother trying to talk me out of the MS keyboard it's not worth the effort.
2. I own a MS Intellimouse explore that that's taken care of
3. I don't like floppies but I have an OLD drive laying around elsewhere
4. OS is take care of
5. Netgear NIC will be bought at local staples
6. Don't bother about a larger HDD it's not going to happen. I've got a 12 gig in my thinkpad which is fine, plus 30gigs in my bro's machine, 40gigs is more than enough for now and I'll upgrade later if need be.
7. I have a plextor 12/10/32 that is in my bro's machine right now until I get this built.
8. I just bought a Cambridge SoundWorks DTT3500 DD5.1 surround sound speaker system so that's also take care of.

Hmm sounds good.
But I forgot I'm also looking for TV out. I just poked at MWave (I'm looking to buy everything from one company) and they had ELSA GLADIAC 511 64MB AGP GEFORCE2 MX400 W/TV OUT (*While Supplies Last!) for 126. Sound good?
Am I better off getting a normal card and then a TV out card, or should I get them togeather? I'm looking to be able to out Svideo / RCA to my TV for DVD watching.

Just make sure to get the MS Natural PRO, and not just the elite. The elite has funky arrow keys while the pro has the normal ones. Also, I have a really big problem with IBM hard drives. I bought one last March(2000) and about a month ago it died for the 4th time. No IBM is bing a bitch because they replaced my last drive with an OEM drive and refuse to warranty it.

I have had great luck with my IBM drives (the ones in my laptop aren't IBM ARRG). My bro is running my 20gig drive and several of my friends are running them without problems.

you must get like 12 fps at that res, not playable by my standards..anything over 1024 starts to lag with geoforce 2, imho.

Well I've got 100-150 to play with and I'd really like it to have TV-Out but if it's a great deal without I guess I can live without it. So what would you recomend??

Re: Good video card for around 100 bucks (BUCKWILDVW)

I was completely unimpressed with GeForce 2 MX cards. My friends ATI Radeon 32mb DDR outperformed my GeForce2 MX 64mb (sdram). Blew me out of the water. So I bought an ATI Radeon 64MB DDR w/VIVO...at the time GeForce 3 cards were out of my price range. I saw a Radeon 32mb DDR (no video in/out) for $75 this weekend.

Re: Good video card for around 100 bucks (jerk)

I agree with the MX I've heard it's not that great.
How about this :
MSI G2Ti PRO-VTG (MS-8836) GEFORCE2 TI 64MB DDR 4 X AGP 3D GLASS - RETAIL128-bit DDR Memory. Integrated Hardware T&L Engine. Hardware Monitoring Function Supported. 3D Glasses. Bonus Full-Version. Software Power Pack Bundled. Remarkable Visual Allure 3D Game - Sacrifice InterVideo WinCoder. InterVideo WinProducer MSI 3D Theater (For 3D Stereo Glasses) MSI DVD, 3D!Turbo, Live Update Series. Supports Windows® 9x, ME, NT, 2000.
For 145 bucks. It's a tad more not much than I wanted to speed but looks like a good deal. They have the same thing but without the stupid glasses it looks like but it's OS right now.
