Hey yall, I just got my new Car and Driver, and I must say that I am now more in agreement with other vortexers and their dismay for the C&D results. I have been reading C&D for almost 10 years, I am now 23 and have 1750 miles on my 01 VR6 GTI. I have driven almost every other car on this great earth and NO OTHER DRIVETRAIN captures my heart like the GTI's stellar lineup. I couldn't believe the remarks these writers were making about our car. Personally I will be writing a letter to the editor (finally a use for all my college english classes) enclosing a cancelation to my subscription. I will wip up somthing smart and tangy and who knows maybe they will print it. Anyhoo I am listing the "C&D Backfires segment" address and am encouranging you to stand up to the misleading, tainted decision's of magazine writers who would rather sip wiskey on a later flight, than give their readers what they expect, the 1.8t in 1ST!!!!

Re: Group letters to Car and Driver Editors... (EPilot)
What's the deal? Magazines aren't made to appease enthusiasts of a certain brand. What good would that do? They drive the cars and give their oppinions, while trying to look at everything objectively. Although they don't always base their oppinions of certain cars on the same things I do--character, value for money, distinction, driving enjoyment, I usually agree with their results. The 1.8t is a great engine, but the results say a lot about floppy suspensions and a heavy car. I'll take a GTI over most things it its class, but hey, ya gotta give credit where credit's due.
And please, spare me of your grammar and spelling corrections, professor.

I think it's funny how posters here act like the freaking sky is falling everytime a mag give their car a less than stellar review.
Why does it matter? It's only their OPINION and many hardcore VW lovers agree with it.
Re: Group letters to Car and Driver Editors... (8vGTI)
Well, first off, let me say that the latest issue of car and driver was exceptionl as far as content goes: hot hatches, M3 GTR, WRC, etc...
If you actually read the entire hot hatch comparison, you'll notice that they explicitly state that while the GTI is more upscale and full of creature comforts, their main criterion for a "hot hatch" is fun-to-drive-ness. If you notice, the SVT Focus (winner) got a 6 in build quality, yet they say it was exceptionally fun to drive. So there you have it, their logic is almost infallible. One can infer that while the MkIV GTI might be a good car, it doesn't make a good hot hatch, according to Car and Driver. It seems rather rash to cancel your subscirption because they gave your car placed third out of three in a comparison where slick shifters and stiff suspension are more important than heated seats and leather.

Re: Group letters to Car and Driver Editors... (A4Jetta)
Counterpoint:
If that SVT FOcus was wearing a VW badge, you all would think its the second coming of Christ himself. Give credit where credit is due, two years ago you people were bitching that America could not build a good small car OR a hot hatch.
However, taken with the mindset that most owners would modify, I bet the ratings would change a little. When considering the potential in the aftermarket, I do think the GTI would have won. You could make it almost as fast for less of an outlay. (remember the SVT JRSC)
But as a stock package, that SVT Focus is DAMN tempting...I even love the way it looks now.
Oh yeah, Matchstick, grow a pair.
