I just purchased a '98 GTI and the shifter on it is really worn out. I can't seem to figure out how to remove it. I was hoping someone on here could help me out.

Try smearing mayonnaise around the base of the shift knob. The greases in the mayo will help the threads break loose and it should just come right off.
