I believe this is true can someone tell me. The GTI VR6 is made in Wolfsburg right?
I am thinking of buying one very soon. I cannot wait for the new 24V.
Thanks in advance...

Re: GTI made in Germany... (DGMVW)

Just check the first digit in the VIN.
If it is a 1 or 2 it is the US, 3 is Mexico, 4 is Canada (I think), W is Germany, S is England, J is Japan and that is all I know off the top of my head. The 12 or 14 digit will tell you the factory for VWs.... I've got a list at work....

ALL GTI VR6's are made in Germany, NOT all 1.8T's are.
Most if not all Golfs are made in brazil/mexico (ie 1.9TDI's, 2.0l's, and some 1.8T's)
Doesn't make a bit of difference though.
Well engineered cars are good no matter where there built.

This is pretty much correct (I think '2' is Canada, '4' is US truck, and '5' is Canada truck). Early mk4 Golfs/GTIs were made in Germany. Late '00's and early '01's were made in Germany or Brazil. Late '01's and '02's are made in Brazil. Check the VIN to be sure (it's pretty hard to tell otherwise).
If you want a new German-made mk4 right now, you have to get a Jetta Wagon.
The 'first digit of the VIN' thing applies to all motor vehicles. For example, my Triumphs' VINs start with 'S's as they were made in England.

Re: GTI made in Germany... (soundzero)

Indeed, the price sticker will tell you where the car was assembled and where the various parts came from. Most GTIs are currently made in Brazil. Every single GTI I've seen in the last six months had a VIN starting with 3BW (i.e. Brazil). I haven't seen a single 2002 German-built GTI--1.8T or VR6 in my dealership travels. Someone here must know when production was transferred completely to Brazil. I think it happened halfway through the 2001 model year. There may still be a few German-built cars floating into the country, but they are very rare I think.

Re: GTI made in Germany... (u4ea)

So to end your confusion here is the right answer:
GTI (VR6 and 1.8T)
2000 GTI - all made in Germany. Brazil factory wasn;t ready yet to roll out this model.
2001 GTI - mostly made in Brazil. Limited number imported from Germany.
2002 GTI - All in Brazil.
99.5-02 Jetta(2.0,vr6,1.8t) - Mexico
99.5-02 Golf - Mexico.
Passat All - Built in Germany
Jetta Wagon - All in Germany.
Beetle = All in Mexico.
Eurovan= who cares ?

I think it does matter where it's built, IMO. I can always tell you just by the look.
I did the test with two gti's both same color, year and next to each other and brand new. VR6. Without looking at the VIN. Just took a look outside and inside and was able to spot the German one.

Re: GTI made in Germany... (EPilot)

Because Mexico and Brazil are skirting third world status, depending on your perspective.
People have misconceptions of unskilled, untrained, pennies-an-hour laborers assembling cars w/no concern for quality...when they're not on "siesta".
Typically these misconceptions are from 'murricans who haven't been to Mexico or South America and have only seen a Latin workforce doing basic manual labor for $6/hr here in the states.

Yea everyones hoping for the Blond haired blue eyed German hand making their very own VW but instead you get a non German factory worker.
Very funny.
