Actually, they're building Fiats.
Although this movie is supposed to be set in Pennsylvania, the factory scenes were filmed entirely at the Fiat IAVA plant in Argentina.
Fiat models featured in the film are Strada, Regatta, 127, and 128 - although the Regatta and the 127 get the most screen time.
Look close and you'll even note that some cars still have the Fiat badges on them, or the Fiat Grilles, instead of the fake "Assan Motors" grilles.

If you look at the cars they look just like Foxes and Rabits. And how better to make it look like a real car company then to take a german car and call it Japanise.

Cool thanks that was driving me crazy. They looked like VWs but there were a few discrepencies
