Re: gutting out a cat? (8v-inside)

Loud car in Boca Raton...hmmmmm. Sounds like you are just looking to get pulled over
Minimal gains if any power wise. Don't they still do emissions in Florida?
Where is your Dad's shop? My wife used to live in Coral Springs and I alsmost went to FAU for graduate school.

LOL, yea but im sure most of the cops know me by my name now with 8 tickets. No more emissions in florida! My dads shop is by sunrise and 441. Where did you go instead of FAU? I'm going to spend a year at FAU and then its to FSU baby! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

quote:

put straight piping that you can attatch/detach to bypass cat.
Explain this please?

okay. what you do is cut out the cat from your piping. youll probably need to weld on more pipe to the cat, but thats not important. then you cut a piece of pipe long enoungh to reach both ends of the original piping still atactched to the car. then, you can rig up a bolt on type system, where you can bolt on the sraight pipe, and if you need it inspected, you could simply unbolt the straight pipe and bolt in the original cat. you see what im sayin?

I ended up staying in Louisville, KY and now I am in Wisconsin (brrrrrrr). What work does your dad do? Did his shop ever work on a white Toyota Starlet? A friend of mine had a roll cage installed in his Starlet in that area. Our dog is from a junkyard in Sunrise also. She hates the heat and loves the snow

Well, my dad really owns a used car lot. But there's also a service shop there with air tools and lifts.... God bless them. I don't think your friend got his work done at my dads place. Also what junk yard did you get your dog from?

Re: gutting out a cat? (gin8122)

you lose power by gutting the cat apparently.....
back-pressure is all messed up and the emissions swirl around in the open space and screw with the flow of the emissions...
just something to think about
this is according to my friend who is going threw a mechanic program!

Re: gutting out a cat? (Dorrado)

Dorrado is correct. The head/valve train/cam etc. all work in conjuction with the intake and exhaust system. The back pressure produced at the cat helps time a negative exhaust pulse to arrive in the combustion chamber during valve overlap. This helps assist the piston/rings pull in a fresh charge. If you mess with the exhaust you should also alter intake and timing to match your mods. If you don't know what you are doing you will more than likely end up losing power. It takes a LOT of knowledge and tuning experience to get this stuff right. Stick with the bolt ons unless you have a lot of time, flowbench, dyno, etc.
