So I bought the game this afternoon, and all I have to say so far is: http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif I have NEVER had a game give me more CRAP trying to install. It's absolutely absurd. Steam is now required to play the game, and it WILL NOT WORK. I keep getting all kinds of server errors when I try to register my account. Steam's support forums are down and I can't find what I need in their help section. Has anyone else had problems with this? I'm on 56k, so that might be part of it, but I have no firewall or any of that stuff, and it keeps saying like "Failed to find master authentication server." Piece of crap. Don't waste your money...

56 f**** k? must die now!

if they banned all the users still stuck in 1998 that would fix all the problems with online gaming. i had no idea this finally came out, will definitely buy it soon. dave, you can sell me your copy for half price.

Gee, hate the game because the activation service is over burdened.

The game is great, but Valve is not going bend on making it hard for people to crack (though it is already) and therefore they are willing to force everyone to register online. Everyone and their mother is trying to register that game and get online, its going to be busy at times. Just like when MS releases a big patch and no one can get to it for the first day. Patients little one. While they should have had more server availability for opening day, it reflects nothing on the game itself. Just like IKEA should have had more parking available for opening day, it effects nothing on what they sell. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

shuttup dave, im trying to get a free game!

If you want it free, talk to me offline.

But its definately worth the $49 retail.
(Oh, and Steam isn't required to play it if you take the time to search the net for work arounds. Though at 56k, searching the net may take you more time than just waiting for the load to drop on the Steam servers.)

I forgot that I had Counter-Strike and the old version of Steam installed from a long time ago, so I uninstalled everything (including HL2) and I'm gonna try it again, everything fresh. If it doesn't work this time...maybe I'll just have to wait till tomorrow. Either that or search for a way around Steam, cuz I don't plan on playing online anyway...

how is the single player? is there a single player?

The basis of the game is single player...online is just all the more fun.

speaking of single players - doom3 or hl2?

Doom3: nothing but environment and mood. Gameplay itself was mediocre and lack luster. But it still scares the crap out of me when playing in a dark room with the suround sound in full effect. Still though, not a true winner http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
HL2: while some will say it doesn't have the graphics of Doom3, current reviews of the just released game show it beating out D3 in the graphic "Wow" category. I agree with them. Add to that great game play and a superb physics engine and you got a winner. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Forget all this nonsense, Wolfenstein is where it is at, I am talking the 1980's or 90's release

As Dorky as it sounds, Tulmad should throw another LAN Party, going back to my younger days, a night of FPS's and beer would be fun

Some folding tables in the garage, beer in the keg, and you're set.

Or we could do it at your house
either way I'd be down. Just need to get my hands on some of these new games, I think the last FPS I got into a bit was Counter Strike. I used to play Quake 1 and 2 to no end in HS though

Re: Half-Life 2, anyone? (Davezilla)

HL2 is a sweet game, but terribly packaged. Just like halo 2, stores have had HL2 for a while, some of them already selling copies. People that got copies early were not able to play till the 16th due to some online setup BS. If you ask me that is just nonsense, you can't have that much piracy protection on a game. But the game itself is looking sweet, valves physics engine is pretty sweet, not to mention the new facial expression engine...

We're actually talking about it. Maybe the weekend after Thanksgiving, or the weekend after that. I had one in September, so I'm about due for another. I'll post up if there's enough interest. Last time I posted one of those, I basically got laughed off the front page, so I rarely post them anymore.
There isn't any multiplayer in HL2, but I've heard rumors of someone already putting together free TFC and DM mods for it, so that should be just around the corner.
Oh, and as for online distribution, if you all had done like Valve suggested and preloaded the game, it would have taken you zero time to install
http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif. Too bad I'm stuck in Texas on business, or I'd be playing right now.

That's all that HL2 is, single player. That's what requires online activation, but only once. It doesn't check again.
Couter Strike: Source is the multiplayer and its been out in beta for awhile. Its also included with HL2.

gotta pay to play source last i heard
