My 96 Jetta has had problems starting for the past year. It turns over for a good 5-10 seconds before starting. The day before yesterday my wife was leaving work and the thing wouldn't start at all. It would chug like it wanted to but no go. Last night I went to her work and it did the starndard 5-10 crank and fired. It runs rough for the first few minutes but then smooths out. It has new temp sensor, plugs, cap, and rotor. Any suggestions welcomed.

Re: Hard starting, sometimes wont start. (sloppychicken)

I had this same issues and it turned out to be a faulty cap and button.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the ignition coil. Hard starting then ran ok. When it got hot it started to lose power and misfire.
