Have you heard this noise?

660 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  curt.beane
A couple of months ago I started hearing the chirping noise in the file listed below on my '99 Passat GLX. It's coming from the driver's side rear wheel well. It happens intermittently, either while driving or while idling. My dealer thinks it might be related to an EVAC pump, and is supposed to check it out tomorrow. I'm just wondering if anyone else has heard this noise and if so, what was it?
Listen to it here:

YES! That is exactly what I hear when it does it. Mine appears to be from right rear, but I can never get it to do it when I take it to the dealer. They can never hear it and they of course can not find it. They have been very good about checking things out. Perhaps I can take this recording to them and let them listen to it.

Well I emailed a copy of your sound clip to my dealer's service guys and am waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully this will give them a hint, since this is the exact noise I hear. At least I am not the only one, and I find it hard to believe that they have not had this complaint before, considering that they are one of the largest VW dealers in the midwest...we will see what they have to say and I will let you know.

Well my dealer checked it out yesterday. They said it's a noisy EVAP Leak Detection pump. They want $350 to replace it. Unfortunately, it's not covered under my extended warranty, so I might live with it for now

IS the pump located in the rear of the car? Is it near the wheel wells. What does this pump do exactly. Since my car is still under warranty I want to get this fixed. Hopefully, since I have filed the complaint more than once they will fix it even if it goes out of warranty. Perhaps I will communicate to the dealer that your dealer found it to be the EVAC (EVAP?) pump whatever that is... thanks

Yes, the pump is located near the driver's side rear wheel well. I was told that it is part of the emissions control system, and if it fails it will not cause a major malfunction, just poor emissions (i.e. the car will still be driveable). If you're under warranty, I would get it replaced.

It does say "EVAP" on the work order.
