now i'm really starting to get confused.
the car: 1985 Cabriolet. 1.8l 8v, CIS, Completely stock (aside from rubber valve cover and oil pan windage tray).
the problem: when ever i get on the gas, i get some hesitation. This occures when starting out, upshifting, or just plain accellerating in any gear. After gaining about a few hundred RPMs, the hesitation subdues and i accellerate like mad. The car sounds almost go-cartish. There is no clutch slip, but i found if i give it gas between gears the hesitation is very minimal if its there at all.
what have i done: check vacuum leaks, replaced fuel injector o-rings, cleaned injectors, visually checked timing 3 times (no timing light), replaced plugs/wires etc. Was planning a compression test, but need to find the right adapter. i don't think it's a fuel delivery issue but i plan on renting both gauges this weekend and checking those out.
I'm starting to think that it could be an exhaust leak. I've never experience an exhaust leak with a VW and the exhaust leaks i have experienced were in a 454 so that theres a HUGE difference here...
perhaps i should clarify a bit more. The fuel filter has about 1000 miles on it at best. As mentioned, from what i can tell, the timing is advanced by a few degrees. I lined up all my zero marks and then advanced the dizzy a few degrees, backing off a tad when the idle began to increase. I doubt its a fuel delivery problem, but will be checking pressures soon just to double check on that.
When listening to the exhaust at idle, it does sound like its missing randomly. no specific rhythem.
I haven't done much w/ the FI. I've removed and cleaned the injectors, replaced the fuel filter, and i always run Cheveron fuel.
Performance hasn't suffered to greatly. i still pull up my favorite hill at over 70mph and can accelerate all the way up it in 5th. I do need to rev to get off but not much, no more than 1600 rpm gets me goin. No differences between cold or hot (besides having heat)...
so this morning i go out and pull out the air filter. Wasn't too dirting on the intake side of things, but the otherside had a nice oil spot. From what i hear though that't not much to worry about right?
also, i cleaned the air flow pentameter. It too was coated with oil and the topside was terrible. could have been some sticking going on there.
problem now is after doing that, she's not starting. i pulled everything back out out, double checked everything. the flow plate is moving freely, and snapped everything back together, but still no go. it's been an hour since i last tried starting and i will try again here shortly...

Oh yeah. Weak coils cause all sorts of wierd stuff. But I bet the TB cleaning did the trick, and unfortunately, the coil felt lonely.

I hate to be redundant but I would make sure the timing is perfect. It sounds like you have everything covered except this and the fuel ratio which seems to be ok. When my car was doing the stutter the timing was only off by a few degrees. I figured the timing was pretty good until I hit it with a timing light. At first I thought the car was too lean, because richening the mix got rid of the stutter, but that made the car way too rich.
Have you tried advancing until the idle rises, then leaving the timing set there, and then adjusting the idle down some with the screw?
The coil could be weak as well, if you have one that you know is good (or know someone who has one) you might swap them to see if it does anything.

yes WR, i did take your first responce into consideration. I was mainly looking for additional input. wanted to get a full picture. I do thank you and will check on that as well!
at this point, unfortunately, i have to wait on things. While dinkin around today, i found that the car raping bastard that stole my stereo the other weekend also snagged my socket set and a few other tools. While that doesn't have any effect on the time adjustments, it will put back other things. I will try to find myself an allan wrench tomorrow and make those adjustments on my lunch break tomorrow...

Hey Isaac, I've got a timing light, not to mention a coil from an '85 GTI laying around...I'd be more than willing to help out! - John I've also got a compression tester...hell...I've got a dwell meter and tach! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Don't know what engine code that you have but if the dizzy has a vacuum diaphragm, then you might check the mechanical advance mechanism for binding. Had a similar problem with a '80 Rabbit one time where the car would hestiate for a second and then run very well to redline. The mechanical advance and base plate in dizzy were binding to some dirt and minor rust. Disassembled dizzy, cleaned, and lubed it. Ran great after overhaul of the dizzy.
If your car has knock control, then disregard this. Cheers, WWR.
