under the hood of my mk4 GTI, there was a black thick blanket thing that was connected to the hood. what exactly does it do? I pulled it off, becuase i didn't like how it looked when my hood was up, but i'm just wondering. i'm assuming it helps suck up some of that engine heat.

I think it was intended to keep the heat from damaging the hood's paint or warping it but I could be wrong. Also acts as a sound insulator. Car looks awesome, btw http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

When i was buying this car. the sales person says that if the engine catches on fire the "blanket" will melt and cover the flame

yea its def for sound dampening, my 2005 gti dident come with it cause GTis are sport cars and ppl want to hear the motor so they dont put them in anymore so its safe to be without it http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

they stopped putting them in to cut costs. the 04.5+ GLIs don't have them either. it's not just GTIs. and the GTI isn't considered a "sports car." it's a hot hatch.
