Help a Honda guy out!!

1422 Views 40 Replies 23 Participants Last post by  Racin'Jason
Hello all! I was recently involved in an accident that more than likely totaled out my '00 Civic Si (no, NOT my fault!
). Anyways with the blue-book value being much more that what I currently owe (good 'ol Honda!
) I am in a good position to look at something a little more 'upscale' than a civic. However I am totally NOT sold on any of Hondas redesigns (especially the new Si), and I am about 75% sure I'm going to go with the GTI 1.8t! I need you guys to push me that final 25%! I am still debating one of the final type SH Preludes on the local Honda lot, but more and more VW is calling out to me! You guys seem overall pretty happy with your choice, but should I be concerned about the build quality of this car? I've been browsing VW forums the last couple of days, and it does seem to be a problem many are dealing with. I can say one thing about the Hondas I've owned, for the most part they stay free of mechanical issues and major squeeks and rattles for the first few years at least. I can't deny that the idea of modding a car that actually yields true power gains is quite appealing though!
Oh BTW - the search function has been disabled, could someone please list the current models of GTIs and Jettas and thier respective engine codes? Thanks!!

You have to understand that VW is marketing their cars "upmarket", I think many people have misunderstandings about how high they quality of the cars is going to be. Compare a Mk. III to a Mk. IV and you will see leaps and bounds in quality increases. Compare it to a BMW (the territory VAG is aiming for IMO), and you won't be happy...
The other thing is, we represent a very small segement of the market, not everyone has the problems that we mention here, and most of the time they are nit picky things...
There are 2 different body styles, the Golf and the Jetta. The Golf comes as a 2 door, or a 4 door, and the Jetta comes as a 4 door. The GTI, although it is a Golf, is considered a different car here in the North American market. That said here is what you can get currently in the 2002 line up:
Golf:
GL - 2.0l naturally aspirated 4 cylinder gasoline, 1.9l turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel. Available only as a 2 door.
GLS - 2.0l naturally aspirated 4 cylinder gasoline, 1.9l turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel, 1.8l turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline. Available only as a 4 door.
GTI:
GLS - 1.8l turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline. Available only as a 2 door.
GLX - 2.8l naturally aspirated 6 cylinder gasoline. Available only as a 2 door.
Jetta:
GL - 2.0l naturally aspirated 4 cylinder gasoline, 1.9l turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel. Available only as a 4 door.
GLS - 2.0l naturally aspirated 4 cylinder gasoline, 1.9l turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel, 1.8l turbocharged 4 cylinder gasoline, 2.8l naturally aspirated 6 cylinder gasoline. Available only as a 4 door.
GLX - 2.8l naturally aspirated 6 cylinder gasoline. Available only as a 4 door.
OK, I'm not too welll versed in the Jettas, so I think I have them all, but I could be wrong. If I messed up the Golfs and GTIs it's cause I'm typing this at about 20 wps

BTW: VW doesn't really have engine codes as they do with Honda (i.e: B16, etc). However, they have different engine codes for the same engine, for example the 1.8Ts have AWW, AWD, AWP, etc. as the North American engine codes, and AGU, AUG, etc. as the Euro-spec codes...

what a useless reply to an honest request
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

I drove an Accord (actually two generations) for 10 years. Great and totally reliable cars, but painfully boring. The biggest difference between Japanese and European cars is that the Japanese cars are engineered for Americans who are prone to neglecting their cars. European cars in general require more "loving care".
Now, what you hear here is valid complaints from folks who are perfectionists. They overlook the torquey engines and solid handling in favor of squeaks and rattles. In spite of all that, I still love my car because everyday I'm excited to get in and drive it.
And before everyone yells at me about MAFs, O2 sensors, 2nd gear grind, and window regulators, I admit those aren't minor annoyances. Still, I'd much rather drive my VW than I did my Accords.
My recommendation after all that is to drive the car and decide from there! Never make a decision based on what anyone here tells you.

Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

LOL, no prob, don't take it as the gospel though... I might have some of the Jetta combos wrong... And welcome to the Vortex by the way.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

heh, Racin'Jason, i'm jason also, used to drive a 99 Civic EX, and before that a 95 Civic EX. I know what you mean about them not feeling real upscale though. I really was anxious to get rid of my 99 Civic when i had it, now it's kind of something I miss, because it was super reliable and got great gas mileage... but i'm very very pleased with my jetta.
I agree with JettaRed's advice, drive it for yourself and get a feel for it. See if it agrees with you and if it's something you can see yourself driving. keep in mind, VW's are quirky vehicles. window regulators and MAF sensors are our constant enemies, but they make up for it with the fun factor.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

The worse part of VW ownership is putting up with the snobbery of other owners.
Your question is completely legit. I replaced a civic with my GTI for the same reason. If you want an econo hatchback loaded with luxury and power, VW is really the only choice.
Build quality? I dunno, if you read any car forums you'll see about the same amount of gripes. For what it's worth, I haven't had any of the problems that I commonly read about on this forum. The VWs have a lot of gizmos on them so I expect that I will have more problems with mine than I did with my civic (it had NO gizmos). That's OK with me, I accepted that idea when I bought the car.
Basically, you need to go drive a GTI and decide for yourself. The other info you wanted is on the VW site.

Oh, trust me! I drove it, and I was COMPLETELY sold on it!!
To be honest with you, it was almost like one of those "this must be too good to be true" type of things!
I mean for the price, this seems like a LOT of car for the money! But then I get on these forums, and I'm kind of like "ahhhh, ok so it's a build quality thing"
Regardless, I am still heavily leaning towards the GTI, and I guess I just need some reassurance from current owners!

Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

Just to push you the 25% on the mod side of things....
I have a 2000 GTI with the 1.8t engine (AWD engine code, about 6 or 7 psi of boost, rated at 150 hp).
After a 300 dollar ECU upgrade from Upsolute (boost goes to 14 psi or so), my car put out a dyno-verified 205 hp and 243 ft-lbs of torque (check the dyno graph in the sig to see how low the power comes on, too). I just got a 2.5" cat-back exhaust, and that will make 12-15 more horsepower, as opposed to the 3 or 4 hp you'd see on a N/A car. I can also get a 3" downpipe for another 12-15 hp. SO, for a little more than 1000 bucks, I'm at about 230 hp. Neat, huh? With a 2002, you'll see about 10 more horsepower because of changes between the AWD and AWP (2002 model) engines.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

I traded in my '99 Blue Si for a '01 Jetta 1.8t and haven't looked back since. You don't have to wind up the key so much to get it to move. I highly recommend a boost controller or a chip though. It puts the fun factor way up there. Go GTi or something with the Luxery/Sport Suspension.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (BrandonC)

Hey Racin'
I'm new to the Volkswagen regime...as of about 5 days ago. Man let me tell you...I got my car with 52 miles on it (1.8T 2002) and I now have 854 miles. I have never driven a car that is so fun to drive in my life. It's got good power and from all I've heard and read so far on this forum VERY modable if that's what you're into. Also, it looks saaawweeeeet. I held out for the dealer to find me a black one with the 17 inch rims...and it was well worth the wait. It's a beautiful car to look at and to drive. GET THE GTI. me personally I test drove the Jetta, Passat and the GTI...and the GTI just had the sports car feeling that I wanted. With a couple mods ($2000 or so's worth) you can have the car up the 230hp if you want or more. Go for it. As far as quality goes...the only vehicles from VW that I've ever heard consistent gripes about are the Beetle's. I haven't heard many prob's with the other models and I did a good deal of researching be4 buying. The prob's that I've seen existing were stupid one's like the window regulator and some small electrical crap. But all for none the car is amazing IMHO. Good luck! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

Me, being a VW guy, former Honda owner, I say go with the Type SH hands down. My friend has one built up without his F-Max turbo on the car yet...and the car is quicker than the few 1.8T's I've been in. You might not like the interior of the SH as much as you would for the GTI but besides that, Id say the SH is a great car to have. Both have a lot of potential as well, so its your choice man...Just giving my $.02. Good luck.

Hey man, in all niceness, good luck with what ever you get, VW or not.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

I hear ya dude. My suggestion (well if you're anything like me I guess) don't get the beige leather...messy messy messy. But other than that don't those 17's look sweet!? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Racin'Jason)

it's not a build quality thing. my car, while not perfect, has stayed in tact very well. it has the normal knocks and rattles, but in light of my car being so sweet, i really don't care. you're not going to stop at a light and the wheels fall off, the doors fly off their hinges, hood flies up in the air and your left with your car lying on the ground with a bewildered look on your face. the car is great. i would say if you drove, was very impressed with how it drove, and overall liked the aesthetics of the car, then buy it. look at this way, as soon as you start tweaking that lil turbo engine and suspension.......you'll love the car even more.
Re: Help a Honda guy out!! (Tronious)

other than a few VW jerks that won't reply to anything honda.. the vdub and the vortex is top notch!! Buy one and hold on! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
