Yeah, I'd second the ignition switch. Try this, the next time your lights go out, see if your rear defroster works or wipers or turn the key towards teh right (as if you were trying to start the car up again). By turning the key, if the lights come on, I'm confident that it's the ignition switch because I had this problem.

I will third the ignition switch. If your fan speed switch doesn't work either, it's definately the ignition switch. Do a search on ignition switch and you will find a ton of symptoms.

so Im not too sure what the ignition switch is....I know that I replaced the entire ignition system this summer under warranty, would this be related? is it an expensive item or is it something I can do at home?

Note, this is for a B3, but I don't imagine its much different.
Unless you have a press, you can't change the ignition switch yourself. The part costs $25 from a dealer, but to get to it, you have to remove the collar its mounted on off of the steering column. A normal steering wheel tool doesn't work at all on that bearing laden bi***.
If you had it replaced under warranty this summer, this is not a normal thing to happen - it should be covered under warranty still.

Yes, it probably is due to the work done on the ignition system. You'll need to take it back.
On replacing the switch yourself, the switch can be replaced by breaking the rear portion on the switch mounting braket on the steering wheel collar and sliding the new switch in from the back. The pressed collar is definitly dificult to take off without the proper tool but I have done it twice with a air chisel and extreme prejudice.
It's funny because I just got back from Radio Shack where I bought a momentary push button and relay. I'll be puting in a push-button ignition this weekend just in case my switch goes out again. I'll just find a good spot to hide it and I can then use it incase of emergency.

Thanks for all the help guys. After poking around, rewiring my fogs, side markers and amp and disconnecting/reconnecting my low and high beams, checking all the fuses and pulling out the light switch assembly, everything is back to normal now...just one of those quirks i guess, im still going to have it looked at.....thanks again guys!!!

take it back and make sure they fix it again better yet call your warranty people and make sure they don't charge them a second time
