Help diagnosing a VR6 problem

My girlfriends 2000 Jetta VR6 is acting up. One time while I was driving it on the highway the engine decided not to respond to the gas pedal as if it had run out of gas, I coasted a couple seconds and then power came back. She has had it die on her when idleing and turning. The last time, the dash lite up before the engine died. From what she has told me, the car starts up right away and this isn't happening on wet days (i.e. not a wet distributor). I know with TDI's this screams Realy 109, but I don't know if this relay is the same in gas VW's (the search funtion didn't turn up any discussion about realy 109), can anyone help me out?
